Hamline Students Volunteer

We are so excited about our new partnership with Hamline University. When you come for the auditions on November 22, you will be greeted by Hamline students who are voice and instrument majors. Other students will serve as stage manager, judges’ guides, singers’ guides, and ushers.

The students’ assistance will allow our dedicated committee members to join the audience and enjoy the success of their many contributions to this special day. We are grateful to our Hamline hosts for coordinating the student volunteers, among the countless other ways in which they have ensured that our singers, judges, and guests have a seamless audition experience.

North Dakota District Auditions

On Saturday, November 15, an impressive group of eleven singers (eight sopranos, and a tenor, mezzo-soprano, and baritone) competed at the Metropolitan Opera National Council - North Dakota District Auditions in Grand Forks. The judges were Korliss Uecker, soprano (and North Dakota native), Benita Valente, soprano, and Melissa Wegner, Associate Director of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.

Ms. Uecker and Ms. Valente are distinguished, North American performers who have thrilled audiences with memorable performances at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City and worldwide. In addition to serving as an audition judge in North Dakota, Ms. Wegner, A Buffalo, New York native, will host The Art of the Audition as part of the Minnesota District competition next weekend.
The judges awarded two winners: Shelley Mihm and Anne-Marie MacIntosh, who will move on to the Upper Midwest Region auditions in St. Paul on January 31, 2015. Ms. Mihm was also awarded the Greater Grand Forks Symphony Vocal Soloist Prize and will perform with the symphony orchestra next season.

Ashley Boychuk, Jessica Kos-Whicher, and Ana Toumine received Encouragement Awards. After the competition and the judges’ conferences, Ms. Valente presented a master class with 10 singers.
