A Look At Islam's Concepts
Of Heaven And Hell

Hump Day - Day Of Prayer For The Muslim World Vol. 153

"Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him." John 3:36

Six major beliefs are commonly held by Muslims which are laid out in the Qur'an and the Hadith (the sayings and practices of Muhammad). Among those beliefs, is a belief in heaven and hell. So what do Muslims believe about heaven and hell? Let us take a glimpse today.

Heaven And Hell - Islamic Terminology

  • Jannah - Muslim term for heaven or paradise
  • Jahannam - Muslim term for hell

Heaven - Who Goes There According To Islam?
       1. Martyrs

Among others, the following passages from the Qur'an below highlight the general Muslim belief that martyrs go immediately to Jannah. The phrase "in the way of Allah" often is seen as a reference to jihad.

"And if ye are slain, or die, in the way of Allah, forgiveness and mercy from Allah are far better than all they could amass. And if ye die, or are slain, Lo! it is unto Allah that ye are brought together." Surah 3:157-158

The same belief is stated in Al-Mughira in the Hadith.

       2. Those men and women fortunate enough to receive Allah's capricious mercy on Judgment Day based on their good deeds
       3.  Houris - there is disagreement, as they are either faithful believing women or, as most scholars think, a separate created group of women with unique characteristics

Heaven - What Is It Like According To Islam?

  • According to, Jannah is like a garden in which there are beautiful women, couches with rich brocades, flowing cups and juicy fruits, rivers of water, rivers of milk, rivers of wine and rivers of clear honey (all the wine you want without intoxication!)
  • Jannah is also described as pyramidal with seven levels  and eight gates. Muslims are encouraged to strive for perfection in serving Allah in order to attain the highest level, as their deeds determine their gates and level.
  • There is marriage in heaven in Islam (Hadith - men have 72 wives some of whom are Houris)
  • Women who enter Paradise will be restored their youth and virginity (Muhammad)
  • There is sex in heaven - apparently lots of it! Men with both women and Houris.
In short, heaven in Islam is like an orgy of indulgence, sensuality and pleasure. The hadith and Qur'an are graphic in their description.

Hell - What Is It Like According to Islam?
  • Without going into detail, and as awful as it is described in the Bible, the Qur'an and the Hadith are much more graphic in describing Hell. We will leave it at that.

Hell - Who Will Be There According to Islam?
  • According to the Qur'an, EVERY Muslim will go there:
There will be no one of you who will not enter it (Hell). This was an inevitable decree of your Lord. Afterwards he may save some of the pious, God-fearing Muslims out of the burning fire.  (Surah 19:71-72)
  • Those who believe Jesus is God and Jesus is the Son of God (Surah 5:72-73)
  • Those who profess any religion other than Islam (Surah 3:85)
  • All idolaters, hypocrites, etc.
  • Mohammed said, "I was shown the Hell-fire and that the majority of its dwellers are women."
In other words, for Muslims, Hell may be like a Purgatory for many (temporary punishment for their sins), yet some Muslims will never make it out of Hell!

According to Muslim scholar Al-Qurtubi, women will be the majority in Hell at the beginning, and then will form the majority in Paradise when the Muslim women leave Hell (after receiving the due punishment for their sins).

Prayer Needs

  1. Muslims have no assurance of heaven. Pray they can know for certain they can have eternal life (I John 5:13)
  2. In regard to heaven, the Bible focuses on the LORD and His presence, holiness, comfort and our worship of Him. Islam's concept seems to focus on gross sensuality with no regard for holiness, as Allah is viewed as approving their overindulgence (Surah 75:22-23). Pray for Muslims to have a proper understanding of holiness and the fear of the LORD.
  3. Pray that Muslims would have revelation that there is no purging of sins in Hell and neither is there a second chance. Either you have Jesus or you do not when you die (John 3:36; I John 5:11-12 & Hebrews 9:27).
It is most encouraging to have you pray with us today! Thank you for joining us!

Dream so big only Jesus can make it happen!
