Pandemic Versus The Pilgrimage Pillar

Hump Day - Day Of Prayer For The Muslim World Vol. 149

"The LORD reigns, let the nations tremble; He sits enthroned between the cherubim, let the earth shake." Psalm 99:1

Islam's annual Hajj pilgrimage, a major pillar of the faith, began in Mecca, Saudi Arabia Tuesday evening, July 28. This time of intense worship continues through Sunday evening, Aug. 2.

Additionally, the
Eid al-Adha ("Festival of the Sacrifice") is celebrated by Muslims in Saudi Arabia and around the world during the time of the Hajj, as it begins this Friday, July 31.

So how is COVID-19 affecting the Hajj and Eid al-Adha in 2020?

Impact: Pandemic Vs The Hajj
Saudi Arabia has oversight over the Hajj. However, with the highest number of corona virus infections in the Arab world, Saudi Arabia has had to make drastic alterations to the pilgrimage due to the pandemic. Consider:

  • The Hajj annually draws between 2 and 2 1/2 million pilgrims from 160 nations. Per CNN News dated July 28, 2020, the Hajj began this year with only 1,000 pilgrims!
  •  Only people already residing in Saudi Arabia can participate in the Hajj this year - 70% foreign residents and 30% Saudi citizens.
  • Per an Al-Jazeera report dated July 27, 2020, this is the first time ever that overseas visitors have not been allowed on the Hajj!
  • Several major rituals performed during the Hajj have either been sanitized, suspended or eliminated entirely per Al-Jazeera and the Associated Press.
  • Only those in good health between the ages of 20 and 50 can participate this year, and all of them must wear masks
  • The Hajj is Saudi Arabia's 2nd highest revenue source. With prices of oil dropping, the Saudi economy is being destroyed with the additional loss of billions in Hajj revenue!

Impact: Pandemic Vs. Eid al-Adha

  • Shared meals with friends and relatives will be eliminated or restricted in most countries
  • Mosques are closed almost everywhere

Prayer Needs
Over the next 5-6 days, the Muslim world will be turned upside down, as celebrations and rituals important to the faith will be impacted like never before!

  1. Pray for the nation of Saudi Arabia - the birth place of Islam - that a movement of the Spirit of God would begin.
  2. Pray for the Muslim world with the 10/10 prayer initiative in mind. Pray the unsettling events surrounding the Hajj and Eid al-Adha would turn them from Islam and draw them to Christ. A shaking is going on!
  3. For Muslims, a major focus at this time is a lamb and a sacrifice. Pray followers of Jesus would minister Christ and Him crucified to Muslims around the world like never before at this time (I Corinthians 1:23-24).
Yemen Campaign
Please keep praying for the Yemen campaign. Great things are happening, and a detailed update is coming this Friday. Look for it!

We so appreciate your praying with us today! May the LORD richly bless you!

Dream so big only Jesus can make it happen!
