Announcing the Taimen Conservation Alliance

December 2014
Dear Friends,

As a fishing guide in Mongolia, I truly enjoy bringing people together with taimen, then taking a quick photo and promptly releasing the fish. As Executive Director of The Taimen Fund, we take things further--bringing people together for taimen!

I am very proud to report that the newly founded Taimen Fund was hugely successful this first full year of operation. We continued our unique River Keeper program in Mongolia’s Eg-Uur watershed and helped develop and celebrate other grassroots taimen conservation efforts. We are ramping up to widen our scope of influence throughout Mongolia.

A great step forward was helping to catalyze the Taimen Conservation Alliance (TCA), an association of concerned outfitters, NGOs and fly-fishing clubs dedicated to responsible angling and taimen conservation. This summer, the TCA finalized a taimen conservation white paper and presented this to Minister Oyuun of the Ministry of Environment and Green Development in a summit meeting.

The summit brought together some very influential folks, including the Minister, the head of Mongolia’s Protected Areas Bureau, the director of WWF-Mongolia, and Mongolia's former Prime Minister Bayar who is now also the president of the Mongolian Fly Fishing Association.
I made a presentation on how healthy taimen populations enhance green tourism. Jan Wigsten (Nomadic Journeys) spoke about local economies, and Mark Johnstad (Mongolia River Outfitters/Fish Mongolia) presented the Taimen Sanctuary Model.  Mr. Bayar spoke on fly fishing-only for foreign anglers.  It was a real pleasure to work closely with such keen advocates of taimen in Mongolia.

The groundwork has been laid for the future of taimen protection in Mongolia.  Through your donations we will continue our flagship River Keeper program in the Eg-Uur watershed. And, we will work closely with our TCA colleagues to forge community partnerships broadly in taimen habitat. Your donations truly drive this work and I thank you for your dedication.  Please consider a gift to the Taimen Fund again this year.  It is greatly appreciated!

Wishing you well,

Charlie Conn, Executive Director
