I hope this finds you well!
The Taimen Fund (TF) has a lot to be proud of in 2015. Last year, we helped form the Taimen Conservation Alliance (TCA), and this year TCA moved from conservation concept to a functioning team. In 2016, we’ll work with TCA members--Mongolia River Outfitters, Fish Mongolia, RARE, Sweetwater Travel, Taimen Conservation Fund (TCF), BioRegions and World Wildlife Fund-Mongolia (WWF)--on key projects in Mongolia. We’ll also use our traction to help organize Mongolia’s fly fishing community.
When I first arrived in Mongolia in 1998 I could never imagine that over the next 18 years I would be involved with a growing fly fishing community in Ulaanbaatar. These thriving clubs and shops have been greatly influenced by TF. Each spring I attend the Mongolian Fly Casting competition and am always impressed by how eager the participants are to preserve Mongolia’s fisheries. TF plans to harness the passion of these emerging fly fishing enthusiasts by offering tools and knowledge to help execute the National Taimen Awareness Campaign (see below).
As a small NGO, we are excited about the expansion of our programs and team in Mongolia. However, we have not forgotten our roots in the Eg River watershed. This year our partner organization in Mongolia, TCF, renewed long-term management plans with seven villages (soums) to further solidify community partnerships and better protect the watershed through legal sport fishing and enforcement.
A key to success is the Riverkeeper program TF initiated as our flagship program in 2009. It began with 12 local herders and has grown to 30 who patrol the watershed for poachers. Through this program we have seen the level of illegal angling reduce significantly. Our patrol data show that the “word is out” and illegal anglers are less likely to poach within the stronghold created by TCF and TF. So, we feel it is time to continue to spread the impacts to other taimen fisheries in Mongolia.
In another watershed, the Delgar in Hovsgol Province, TF will match Patagonia to sponsor a regional habitat protection effort. We will partner with a team from RARE, WWF-Mongolia and Fish Mongolia as they conduct a summer-long “Pride of the River” campaign. In addition, TF will expand efforts in the ambitious National Taimen Awareness Campaign. This project builds on our Disney-sponsored campaign of 2012, to work with WWF-Mongolia to create a team of volunteers from the fly fishing community. In May 2016, WWF and TF will conduct workshops with fly fishing club volunteers to train them for a 30-soum outreach campaign next summer.
As you can see, due to your generous support, we have built some meaningful programs that position us well to make an impact in the coming year to help conserve Mongolia’s wild taimen. Your donations truly drive this work and I thank you for your dedication and support. Please consider a gift to The Taimen Fund again this year. It is greatly appreciated!
Wishing you a wonderful holiday season!
