CAMRA - Richmond & Hounslow Branch

Dear <<Salutation>>

Christmas and New Year’s Wishes from the Chairman.

May I wish you a merry (but not too merry) Yuletide season and look forward to seeing you at some of our events.

The General Election gave us a new MP in Twickenham in Dr. Tania Mathias, who has already committed to supporting our aims and presented the Branch Pub of the Year award to Rae Williams from the Mason’s Arms in Teddington on the opening night of the Twickenham Beer Festival. The Sussex Arms in Twickenham returned a very creditable runner’s up spot.

The beer festival benefitted from a willing group of volunteers from various branches whom I must thank for without them we could not have a festival. The effects of the World Cup of Rugby and various failures of the rail system on Saturday did see our takings down from last year but we will be able to send a fair donation to CAMRA HQ to support campaigning.

As part of local campaigning, I have submitted two nominations for classification of pubs as assets of community value, one to each of our councils.

Hounslow Council took a very robust stance to the application for the Red Lion in Isleworth to be listed. This was not surprising in that their previous listing of the premises was overturned on appeal. However, after producing a small mountain of paperwork, we have just received news that the pub has been listed as an ACV for five years despite opposition from the owners’ solicitors. With this behind us, I will be looking to have more pubs listed in Hounslow Borough and am grateful for the suggestions sent in by members so far. The application outstanding with Richmond-upon-Thames Council has been with them for several weeks without acknowledgement! I have chased this up today via their website, which indicates that only one building in the whole of the borough has been listed so far, with several refused applications, so watch this spot.

As regional CAMRA transport officer, I campaigned against the rerouting of the 281 bus, which is a useful route for members, linking central Hounslow to Hampton Wick in our area and Surbiton beyond passing numerous excellent pubs en route, including our PotY and runner up. Does anyone have any suggestions on bus-linked crawls for next year?

Lastly, my heartfelt thanks to all our active members, who come to events, form our committee, manage the web-site, get this newsletter out, distribute London Drinker magazine and generally give their time to preserving real ale and our pubs heritage.

Cheers and Wassail to all,
