CAMRA - Richmond & Hounslow Branch

Dear <<Salutation>>

That time of year has come again, when we must consider our pub of the Year 2015 for presentation at the Twickenham Beer Festival in October. As before, I will take your nominations via chairman@rhcamra.org and please give me your first and second choices ranked 1 and 2. Please ensure that I have these by Friday 14th August at latest for long listing at the Branch meeting on 18 August at 8pm at the Railway Tavern, 28 the Quadrant, Richmond, all members welcome.

Theoretically, any pub in our area that serves real ale or cider or perry is eligible but there are some practical considerations: Pubs that have changed management or ownership recently or are likely to do so in the next few months have little chance of success; Pubs should feature in the last two copies of the GBG to show long-term consistency but we can consider very good pubs that may have been overlooked or just missed GBG selection, you know your pubs after all; Please ignore success in non-CAMRA awards, which are sometimes pay to enter; If you only want to nominate one pub, that’s fine but having a second can make narrowing down the list easier.

It looks like a really difficult choice this year, with standards improving all across the London Region so I look forward to some new nominations as well as the old favourites.

Cheers to all, Charles

Assets of Community Value

CAMRA HQ has asked for help to increase the number of pubs listed as Assets of Community Value (ACV) from around 600 at present to 1,500 by the end of 2015 and 3,000 by the end of 2016 with an eventual aim of getting full planning protection for pubs. With thanks to James Watson and others from whose work this appeal is based.

CAMRA’s strategy is that the listing of pubs as ACVs must be conducted by members of the communities that live near and value these local assets and requires a duel approach:

1.       The nomination of pubs by local groups and individuals, supported by CAMRA branches as previously;

2.       Following a recent case decision: The nomination of pubs directly by local CAMRA branches aiming for an average of 7 nominations per branch over 18 months.

Our branch must play a leading role in securing a big increase in their local pubs being listed as ACVs, either by activating and supporting people from the local community or by doing the work ourselves.

Regional Directors and HQ staff have been tasked to provide support to branches. Such support will include: The provision of site plans and ownership details and assistance with completing the required statement of community value.

This campaign provides us with an opportunity for CAMRA branches to reach out through partnerships with other local organisations, pub tenants, local communities and politicians.

What I now need is for our members to suggest suitable pubs for listing. Please do this via me as our pubs protection officer at chair@rhcamra.org.

Cheers all, Charles the chair.
