November 2014

October was a month to remember in the North Texas Association!  I had the great privilege of preaching at the anniversary celebrations of two of our longtime churches; on October 12th, St. John's in Robinson celebrated 130 years, and on October 26th, Friedens E&R in Riesel celebrated 110 years!  Happy birthday to both!

If you weren't able to make it to the Fall Association Meeting at First Congregational Fort Worth, you really missed something amazing!  The entire day was set within the context of worship that quickens the spirit, and truly, our spirits were quickened!  NTA President, Rev. John Will, wrote a wonderful article about it in our conference newsletter, there are great photos up on the NTA Facebook Page, and even Rev. Douglas Anders, our conference minister, was so inspired he wrote about it as well in his blog.  Thank you to all the clergy and delegates who came out, to Rev. Lee Ann Bryce and First Congregational for hosting, and to Rev. Charles Brown, Gail Royster, and Rev. John Will for helping to put the day together.

A 2015 spend plan for the association was approved, as was a motion calling for an increase in association dues - to $3.50 per member per church in 2015; to $4.00 per member per church in 2016; and to $5.00 per member per church in 2018 - this to fund ongoing work we've been called to do as an association of the United Church of Christ. With the increase approved at the meeting, we will have the funds to purchase our new website's future permanent home at ntaucc.org and register with search engines so we will be discoverable. The COM will also be able to fulfill its obligation to fund our portion of the psychological evaluations for our candidates for ministry.  We will again be able to welcome CTS seminary students in 2015.  I will also be able to fulfill a long overdue obligation to visit our three geographically outlying churches and to welcome.  So thank you for your unanimous support of this motion!

We also had a record number of ecclesiastical councils, bringing a new crop of promising leaders into the UCC!  Congratulations to Heather Rodenborg and Stan Nabors of First Community UCC in Dallas, both approved for Ordination Pending call.  Congratulations also to Rev. Ken Ehrke, pastor of Cathedral of Hope Mid-Cities, Rev. Alberto Magana, pastor at Cathedral of Hope's Congregation Latina, and Rev. Phil Hirsch, member of Cathedral of Hope and hospice chaplain; we approved all three for Privilege of Call.  Rev. Magana will be installed on November 30th (time TBA) and Rev. Ehrke on January 11th at 3pm.

We already have 10 clergy planning to gather at Lone Star Cafe in Hillsborough at 11am (note time change from 10am!) on Monday November 10th!  It's not too late to sign up by emailing me (akhumble@gmail.com)!  More gatherings for clergy, ministers, and members in discernment are also in the works.

Last but not least, all men of the NTA are invited to the next Men's Fellowship meeting on Sunday November 16th at Zion United Church of Womack at 3pm.  For more information, contact Ronnie Durham at durhamr25@gmail.com.

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, and there is truly so much to thank God for in the North Texas Association!
