February 2015

[Please Copy and Paste the update below into your congregation's newsletter!]

Dear brothers and sisters,

If you haven't seen our calendar, the new year is in full swing in the North Texas Association of the United Church of Christ!  No sooner had Epiphany passed that a large and lively group of clergy and their families gathered at Promise United Church of Christ for a potluck of fellowship and fun.  On the 11th, St. Paul's E&R UCC celebrated their 125th Anniversary with a special service and luncheon.  That same afternoon, the Committee on Minsitry joyfully installed Rev. Ken Ehrke to Cathedral of Hope Mid-Cities, which was a powerful and moving event for all.  The Committee on Ministry also saw another record number of applicants, and Executive Committee met to began planning the new year, including our Spring Meeting.

Speaking of our Spring Meeting, I am so excited to announce that Rev. Dr. Robert A. Hunt, SMU Professor of Christian Mission and Director for SMU's Center for Evangelism and Missional Church Studies, will be guest speaking at our annual Spring Meeting on Saturday March 7, at 9:30am at St. Paul's UCC in Marlin, Texas!  Given that all of our churches must seek to improve and adapt our outreach to our contemporary context, it will no doubt be both educational and inspiring event that you and your church leadership will not want to miss!  More details to follow.

We rejoice that two of our NTA churches have called pastors!  Woodland Christian Church in Longview has called Rev. Robert Phillips (DoC) and St. Paul's UCC in Gerald has called Rev. Tom Morrow (UMC).  We warmly welcome these pastors, congratulate their congregations, and pray for all in this time of new beginnings.

Last but not least, all are warmly invited to attend the ordination of Stan Nabors at First Community Church in Dallas on Sunday February 8th at 4pm!  Stan has shown exceptional gifts for ministry which he is now using as a chaplain.

And as we move into this holy season of Lent, I pray that you and your church families might together embark on a journey to the cross, stripping away all the idols and distractions in your life so that you might witness the full glory of the resurrection.

Peace be with you,
Rev. Anna Kreisle Humble
Association Minister

On January 15, Rev. Magana and Minister Isabel Marquez traveled to San Francisco, Jalisco, Mexico to offer a word of hope.  On Saturday on they met with families who have been victims of violence and shared prayers of healing.  On Sunday, they held a service of healing, and spread the message of hope and God’s unconditional love to Rev. Magana's hometown.  Many gathered in the town square in the middle of this town to witness and experience Cathedral of Hope and the United Church of Christ.
On Sunday January 4th, representatives from Freedom to Marry, church members, Channel 11 news, and media attended First Congregational United Church of Christ in Fort Worth to demonstrate their faith commitment to marriage equality on the occasion of a Texas court case heard in the New Orleans district court.  Rev. Bryce also shared the story of her wedding and what marriage means to her and her wife Lisa.
