Young Artist Carolyn Quick:
A Musical Life Well Begun
How many young opera singers, having just debuted professionally and still in college, are praised by a reviewer in the prestigious Opera News?

How many 22-year-olds are prepared to discuss the intricacies of Baroque and Renaissance counterpoint, instrumental timbres, and harmonic progressions?

And how many newly minted college graduates, about to begin work for a master's degree in composition, have already composed a substantial portfolio of high-quality pieces, including art songs, a piano suite, and a string quartet?

There probably aren’t very many people in any of these categories. However, University of Oregon graduate Carolyn Quick belongs in all of them. She wowed the critics in Eugene Opera’s The Turn of the Screw last October and is on her way to the University of British Columbia in Vancouver to develop her already impressive composing skills.
