Autumn Newsletter

For Registered Organisations

A big welcome to Autumn! What incredible challenges Australians have endured over these past summer months as communities rallied to support people in bushfire-affected areas. The importance of volunteers, particularly at this time, is exceptionally important!

Thank goodness, the newspapers have reported that the last of the fires are under control or out.

We are forever grateful to the thousands of emergency service volunteers who have dedicated themselves and their time to protecting our country.  But also supporting the emergency services are the volunteers who have been assisting with food distribution, cleanup and rebuilding. The support is immeasurable.

With 2020 highlighting the value of volunteers, Volunteer for Knox Resource Centre is looking forward to working with you across a range of activities and programs throughout the year.  We will continue to support, highlight and advocate for volunteers, volunteer managers and volunteer involving organisations.

Save the Date

Volunteer for Knox is partnering with Knox Council to deliver extremely important Not for Profit Law Training by engaging the services of Justice Connect to present a workshop on Thursday 8 October from 6.30 – 9.30pm at Knox Council. Registrations will be open in July.

We know time is precious but we encourage all volunteer managers and organisation staff to enrol in this training delivered by qualified lawyers with specialist expertise in the areas of law that affect not for profit organisations and charities. All Justice Connect lawyers have experience in delivering legal training to community organisations and many volunteer on boards. This experience means they understand the context in which community organisations operate, sector terminology and the importance of providing clear, plain language legal information.

Volunteer for Knox Training

Volunteer for Knox will also be offering training to organisations and volunteers in 2020. Dates to be confirmed.
  • Cultural awareness
  • Health, Happiness and wellbeing for volunteer managers
  • Conflict management
  • National Standards of Volunteer Involvement
  • Building an inclusive volunteer program

Public Liability Insurance

As you are aware the prerequisite for Registered Organisations has been for Volunteer for Knox staff to sight an agency’s certificate(s) of currency of volunteer insurance before advertising volunteer vacancies and to receive an updated copy(ies) annually. This system has had some failings, including the duplication of effort required for agencies registered with multiple Volunteer Resource Centres across the state and the heavy administrative burden it places.

At the end of this financial year Volunteer for Knox will email you information to make the process smoother for everyone.

When the new system is in place, your agency will need to sign a declaration that you hold the appropriate insurance cover for your volunteers.

If you change your insurance cover, you will need to inform us.

Best of all, you won’t need to send an updated certificate(s) of currency each year!
