What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal.

COVID-19

It can only get better!

The COVID-19 pandemic has been the biggest, most disruptive event to the volunteering sector in the past century. But it can only get better! We have received the road map from the State Government to guide us in opening slowly. We have certainly all pulled together during this challenging time to take some control back from this pandemic as the numbers continue to fall every day.
This new kind of “normal” has also brought a surge of interest in formal volunteering opportunities, with many highly skilled people losing jobs and people wanting to “help” during this difficult time.
Volunteer for Knox expressions of interest in volunteering has tripled during this period.

Moving Online

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a catalyst for Volunteer for Knox to modernise and streamline our practices. Staff realised it was a good time for people to stay engaged via training and online support networks. One of the big tips is to stay busy, eat healthy, exercise and stay in contact with family and friends by phone or online.
Volunteer for Knox has now moved our induction sessions online via You Tube, developed a series of online training programs via Zoom to encourage and develop online skills and connecting to registered organisations and volunteers through other digital means, like social media, Facebook and Instagram.
Volunteer for Knox has worked with its governance team the Knox Learning Alliance (Knox Community Houses) to develop and link into training sessions since Covid lockdowns began earlier this year. Having access to training and trainers from the many courses run at the five community houses gives Volunteer for Knox unique access to adult learning opportunities.
These included:
  • Start Using Zoom
  • How to Host Zoom
  • Introduction to Mental Health
  • Managing Cultural Diversity
  • Creative Writing group
  • Digital Storytelling
  • Work Life balance workshops

Online Catch-ups

We also have a weekly drop in session via Zoom every Wednesday called Stay Connected from 10am – 12 noon where we chat and play games online. This will continue until the end of the year. Everyone is welcome to join. For some people it’s the only time they get to chat and see other faces. Keeping on top of our mental health is vital during this time.
Contact us for find out more about our upcoming training sessions or to join our Stay Connected group!
