Volunteers Lend a Hand
FYI loves our volunteers!  They make so much possible by leveraging staff resources and providing increased one-on-one time with our children. This year, 45 volunteers from three institutions are improving FYI services at every grade level and in a variety of learning areas from STEM, reading and English fluency to sports and the arts.
Fieldston High School @ FYI

For the past two years, FYI has collaborated with Ethical Culture Fieldston School to provide ten seniors with volunteer experience. Just like FYI, Fieldston is committed to excellence in education and to developing young leaders with a commitment to community service. Fieldston students work weekly at three different FYI programs -- Gregorio Luperon High School, The Welcome Program at P.S. 128, and in our middle school program on 171st Street.  They fill varied roles -- as basketball/baseball coaches, group leaders, homework helpers, and tutors.

West Point Military Academy @ FYI

West Point Military Academy visited FYI on January 28th  to launch Project Expand, a STEM based project that invites FYIers to create post apocalyptic worlds from their imaginations. West Point cadets created their own model world demonstrating suspension, irrigation, and security systems to inspire our participants. Looking forward -- forty-five FYIers will tour West Point and visit classes during a field trip scheduled for the April spring break. Special thanks to Cadet John Kneibel who is coordinating West Point's community volunteer program with FYI.

Columbia Presbyterian Hospital @ FYI

A group of twenty doctors, researchers and assistants from the Center for Behavior Cardiovascular Health (CBCH) at Columbia University have joined FYI as volunteers, working at Gregorio Luperon High School and at the P.S. 128 Welcome Program.  Several CBCH employees themselves are immigrants so they bring compassion and insight to their students at Luperon. In the Welcome Program, volunteers play the vital role of Class Coaches, filling in where needed, checking that homework is completed correctly and with understanding, and providing essential tutoring supports.
