We're all feelin' the fall feels

Fall on the Farm
As the temperatures drop, Tristan and the crew have been working hard to get all our furry and feathered coworkers settled into their winter programs.  As you know, during the warmer months we constantly rotate all our livestock around the farm to manage their impact and feed the soil.  In winter, however, this becomes a bit more complicated.  The portable watering systems that allow us such flexibility in the summer are a no-go when it's below freezing outside, and our electric netting fences aren't easy to move when the ground is frozen solid!  We have developed systems that allow us to continue rotating the hardiest and hairiest around the farm all winter long.  Click here to read more about our winter grazing.

The pigs and laying hens go into more permanent seasonal housing when the temps start to dive, where access to winterized waterers and shelter are available.  This year we built a new hoop greenhouse for our laying hens and re-vamped the barnyard paddock where the winter pigs live.  No matter the temperature, all the animals at Spray Creek have continuous and real access to the outdoors (of course!).  Come winter they also get a cozy place to shelter from the cold and, once the forage runs low, organic hay to eat and bed in.
Fall off the Farm
One of the many perks of having such an excellent farm crew is that we were able to enjoy some time off the farm this fall.  We are just finishing up a whirlwind trip that took us through Washington, Montana, Idaho, Utah and Colorado.  We started off the trip with a meeting with our business partners and farm owners Valerie and Brian in Seattle, and we are about to bookend the trip with a Vancouver meeting for the Certified Organic Associations of BC.  We kept it ranchy in the middle, attending a grass-fed bull auction in Burlington Colorado -- stay tuned for an intro to Fame the Bull after he clears immigration.

Amongst all that, we celebrated a baby shower with Tristan's sister, helped friends and family with farm and home projects, visited long-lost friends, saw all the grandparents and introduced Twain to his great-grandpa!  We'll be home late Wednesday, packing your orders Thursday and then straight out for our first winter drop.  So, if we seem a little worn down when you see us this weekend, you'll know we are just recovering from our 'vacation'!
Winter Schedule Begins
Now that summer is a memory and farmers' markets are over, we switch to once-a-month deliveries throughout the Sea-to-Sky.  In November and December, we will meet our Squamish customers at the Squamish Winter Market at the Adventure Centre.  The rest of you can find us in your friendly local parking lot, where we'll be making drops by pre-order only.
Eggs - They last a (really) long time
If you've ever asked 'how long will your eggs last?' you'll recall us responding 'longer than you need them to!'  We also mention this Mother Earth News experiment, which concluded that refrigerated eggs were almost perfect after seven months (!!!) in the fridge.  Don't be afraid to stock up to get you through until we're back in December.  Need a little encouragement?  Buy 5 dozen and get 1 free!
Pastured Veal for Cozy Season
Like many of our products, pastured veal is a seasonal affair.  Fall is here and veal cuts are back in stock!  Doesn't a rich bowl of osso buco sound absolutely perfect right now?  To find out more about how we raise our veal, check out our blog post.
