Hi Passionate Inkers,

The board has been hard at work planning for our online conference November 2-6, and when I say board, a huge shout-out goes to Barbra Campbell for organizing all of our speakers and working on time slots for their Zoom sessions—which will be open to all Passionate Ink Members. (If you aren’t a member, now would be a great time to join as there will be 2 speakers per day!) We will also be hosting a No Pants Required meet and greet Thursday evening where you can visit with the board and meet other PI members, introduce your beloved pets, bring a cocktail or two or three..whatever! Side note: We had a fun time coming up with names for this little meet and greet!

Anyway, I hope you are selling lots of books and getting some words down on pages! We look forward to seeing you at the conference so be sure to (Join, if you aren’t already a member!) and put it on your calendar!

Interview Form

Meet:  Kim Allred

The Redemption book coverKim Allred states that her inspiration to become a writer came from reading the works of Stephen King and Dean Koontz, after the obligatory full series of Nancy Drew. She wrote a lot of horror short stories, and she wouldn’t mind trying a couple of those again.

Asked about her hobbies, she jokes, “There’s time outside writing?” When not spinning yarns about fantasy and time travel, she enjoys hand spinning, crocheting, hand-dying, and felting, as she lives on an alpaca and llama farm. There’s a lot of raw fiber roving the fields at her place. This also includes picking wild black berries and listening to audio books, while she’s hacking away, which she states is very meditative and spurs her muse.

When asked what her parrot would say if they were her writing partner, she replied, “I actually have a parrot that says “Peek a boo” but doesn’t usually help. I can’t leave her alone with my laptop though because she’s been known to strip off the keys.

To the newbie writer she has this advice, “Listen to your muse, not the market. A writing career is a marathon not a sprint. If you are driving someplace and this amazing scene comes to you, check all lanes, pull safely to a stop off the road, and write that shit down.”

Plots and structure are her strengths. She spent many years writing screenplays—and no she didn’t sell any. However, it did teach her a great deal about the three act structure and how to visualize a scene. Her biggest challenge is having enough critique partners to review her work. She belongs to one critique group but the going is slow and they are a bit squeamish with sex scenes. She’s still trying to work out a pattern of writing, marketing, learning and social media. “Ah, the eternal wish of having it all!!!!”

She also states that she would do almost anything for a Starbucks, or velvety bold red, or a hot six-pack—she’s not talking beer.
Kim lives in Oregon.

Meet:  Raisa Greywood

The Redemption book coverRaisa Greywood was inspired to write by her best friend Cristina. When not weaving stories of enemies falling madly in love, Raisa enjoys reading, cooking and horseback riding. Raisa states that if a Parrot were helping her write, there would be so many f-bombs, the poor bird wouldn’t be able to go out in public.

To the newbie, Raisa advises, “You are going to look back on your first book and cringe. I don't know anyone who hasn't. Don't waste time thinking about fixing it. Move forward. Take master classes where you can find them and don't stop improving your skills. Find author groups on social media that have members whose work you enjoy reading and ask for advice. Keep writing and don't give up. You can't get better if you don't practice, but don't beat yourself up if you misstep. We all make mistakes.

It can hurt like the dickens to have someone critique your work, but try not to take it personally. A good critique—even if you don't want to hear it—is meant to help you develop your talent. Never discount the value of a good editor. Ask for recommendations from authors you've read. If you go the self-publishing route, put money into editing before anything else. However, don't let yourself get stalled by too much critique. At some point, you have to say, "This book is as good as I can make it." Don't be that author who spends ten years on a manuscript. It isn't a good use of your time. Channel your inner Elsa and let it go, then move on to your next story.

When you finally get that first contract, read it carefully. Have an attorney look it over too. Go to the publisher's website and look around. Make sure their product is in line with your vision. Also, go to hipiers.com. Piers Anthony has an enormous section of his website dedicated to the good, the bad, and the ugly of the publishing world. Check there before you submit to a publisher to see what other authors are saying. NEVER, and I mean never, sign a contract giving away forever rights to one of your books. Whatever they're offering isn't going to be enough, and the only person that benefits is the publisher.”

Raisa claims that her greatest strengths are her ability to create a mostly error-free draft for her editor. She also writes good and funny dialogue.
Raisa lives in Ohio.
