Lastly, I don’t know where on this planet you are located, but Mother Nature needs a cookie…it’s -13° in the heartland and thank goodness the sun is out because it offers the illusion that the temperature is warmer than it is! On the plus side, this deep freeze is a good time to stay indoors and read books or write them.
Stay warm!

Writing outside of your personal, generational, or cultural experience can be a treacherous road to travel for today's author.  Even with the best intentions, it's easy to create problematic or harmful content when you're unaware of what you don't know. Learn how to use literary criticism to view your work through an alternative lens.  By using literary frameworks, you can gain insight into alternative perspectives that can help you identify and eliminate problematic and harmful content before you publish.

M O N T H L Y    M O M E N T U M

When readers are asked what makes them buy a book, they cite many different reasons: the author, the cover, the blurb... So while the fabulous thousands of words you've written, revised, and edited may entice a reader to buy another one of your books, new readers are using other criteria. And let's face it, who doesn't need new readers?!?!
This month, Passionate Ink's Monthly Momentum covers BOOK BLURBS!

You're not alone if you have a fear-hate relationship with writing book blurbs. But as with the rest of our craft, it's a skill we'd be wise to hone. Join us as we look at blurb writing tips, share blurbs we'd like help with, and support each other as we learn to put our best foot forward.

So, you want to write a series or a continuity series—buckle down and roll up your sleeves. It takes lots of planning and hard work! Why? Because readers remember everything.

I’m one of seven authors in the Aspen Gold Continuity Series. I also have my own four book series scheduled for late this year. I thought you might like to know what it’s like writing in a multi-author continuity series. It’s a blast!

There are many templates for starting such a series.  Some series are set up on a thread, sometimes referred to as a “Stolen Artifacts” theme. In this type of series, the first author starts the story line, then hands it off to the next author who pulls the idea a little farther, and then hands it off again. Another popular premise is a baby series where every book has a baby, finds a baby or adopts a baby. Or maybe the binding factor is that all the books feature a ranch, or have characters in the secret service together. You get the idea.

We chose to build our series around a family and a town. The nucleus of The Aspen Gold Series is the founding family of Spencer, Colorado. Jakob Spencer is the patriarch of the Spencer family and owner of Aspen Gold Lodge, an exclusive retreat. Each of the first six books were based on Jakob Spencer, one of his children or a grandchild. Each author was (and still is) tasked with having a tie back to the main family or the town where cousins and friends still live. In our books, many of the key characters are coming home to their roots.

My first book started with Hunter Jakob Lawe, one of the grandsons. He made friends which are now featured in most of my books.  Hunter is like my minor nucleus. Cheryl St John started with the Cavanaugh cousins. Each of the authors is gradually forming their own entourage of characters, but we all meet up in the town of Spencer at the bank, grocery store or coffee shop.

For any series of book, an extension of the premise is the voice or type of books that will be written. For instance, in some series all the stories are sweet romance or romantic suspense, perhaps paranormal. Going back to our town concept, we decided that towns are a little bit country and a little bit rock-n-roll. Our authors and town are sweet, homey, dangerous, sexy, diverse, and even a touch paranormal. Basically, real life.

Fun! Yes, but this is also where the work comes in, because it’s not just about family or our own individual books. Now we have hair dressers, doctors, policemen, firemen, bartenders, waitresses, school kids, that crossover from story to story. Did I mention we have two grocery stores, a cupcake shop, an ice cream shop, two diners, a donut shop, three art studios…

Bernadette Jones has been making up stories since she learned to read on her daddy’s lap. She has imagined casts of characters everywhere she's called home: Texas, Oregon, Washington, South Dakota, Nebraska, Illinois, Massachusetts, and now New York. After a career in corporate writing, she decided to settle down and put pen to paper doing what she loves. Living the dream in her NYC apartment with her canine companion, she’s bringing her stories and characters to life. Currently writing for the Aspen Gold Series, she is very proud to announce her very-own series of books.

Virgin Ride

By Barbra Campbell
Release Date: March 24, 2021

The Redemption book coverI'd risen above my past while holding on to exactly two pieces of it: my love of music and my lack of trust in people.

The small, mountain town I'd settled in served as a sanctuary when I wasn't on the road performing. Its isolation let me focus on the thing that kept me sane, gave me purpose, and provided a paycheck-my viola. The rest of my needs were met with a stockpile of batteries and a healthy arsenal of fantasies.

Then the Men of Valor rode into town, and I seized the opportunity to fulfill a fantasy and trade in my V-card with no-strings-attached, no questions, and no icky trust and love complications. But life wasn't a piece of music that could be orchestrated. Fate had its own plan, and the single night I let my guard down left me with a decision I shouldn't make alone. A decision that could bring my carefully crafted world to ruins. A decision that was going to challenge me to trust.
