Hi Passionate Inkers,

What is your writing schedule these days? I’m trying to put more of an emphasis on the schedule part by putting my writing schedule first. It’s easy to find other tasks that I could be doing, then before I know it, the day is half gone and it’s time to make dinner or take my daughter to volleyball practice. If I can get my writing done in the morning, it seems to actually get done. I also find that if I write down my word count every night before I go to bed, it helps me stay on track. At the end of the week—usually Friday because Saturday and Sunday we’re doing other things and I may not write—I find it oddly rewarding to see how many words I’ve gotten in the past week. Even day to day, I’m amazed at how much writing I can actually get done in one day!…if I sit and write!

I don’t have a door on my office so people come and go—mainly my kids—and I can hear my husband coming in and out of the house or watching TV it can be distracting. But writing that word count every day is so rewarding and holds me accountable.

I also find that it’s easier to write when you know what you’re writing about. Right? We all know our story idea.  But unless you’re the crazy plotter who writes an outline for every chapter before you dive in,  we don’t know how to fill each chapter. We don’t know all the little details that are taking place.

I’m a panster…mostly, can you tell? So it’s especially rewarding to know what my next chapter is going to be like, where the scene takes place and what’s going to happen to move the story forward. My word count goes higher when I know these things. My word count also gets higher when I give myself permission to just write the chapter and make time to come back and add more. It’s easy to get hung up on little things. I’ve done it numerous times. So again, I’ve been telling myself, just keep writing and go back when I’m done.

With this crazy year, I have one kid home and the other at school, it’s easier than ever for me to get sidetracked.  When that happens, the little details about what’s coming next in the story distract me even more and I put my writing on the back burner.

What have you been doing to stay consistent? To write everyday? To get your word count in for the week? Because we all know that the book isn’t going to write itself!

Meet:  Mira Noire

The Redemption book coverMira Noire decided as a little girl that she
wanted to be a writer after reading the work of Charlotte Bronte.  Mira writes contemporary erotic romance. Her advice for newbie writers would be, “Pace yourself and outline.” Dialogue ad tension in erotic scenes, she states, are her strengths.  The biggest challenges as a writer are losing momentum and being disciplined enough to write regularly.  Her advice to combat this is reading other works, or watching inspiring new content like a movie or television show.  Outside of her writing, Mira enjoys UJAM, Karaoke, and video games.  If Mira had a Parrot for a writing partner it would repeat, “I’m sleepy.”  Mira lives in California, USA.

Meet:  Barbra Campbell

The Redemption book coverAfter a brain injury that reset her personality and caused a bunch of other chaos, Barbra Campbell had to relearn who she was and discovered a desire to write, with an emphasis on Short, steamy/erotic romance. When she’s not turning up the passion on the pages of her stories, Barbra enjoys playing the cello, hiking, paddle boarding and as she puts it, craving pies and pudding. She deals with writer’s block by telling herself to write one sentence, or write for five minutes, or skip to a new section, or write whatever’s in her head even if it is not related. Barbra deals with distraction by designating her work hours and if not actively working on a manuscript or promoting it, she will ask herself if what she’s doing is advancing her towards her goals. If her answer is no, she sets that task aside and gets back to work. As a writer, Barbra states her biggest challenge is self-doubt. She has huge confidence issues and is always second-guessing herself. However, she has some awesome critique partners she can trust to tell her when she writes garbage, so she’s learned to trust her writing if her CPs don’t give her any kickback. Barbra lives in Western Colorado.

Meet:  Charlotte Black

The Redemption book coverCharlotte Black has written since she was in school, and been an avid reader since forever.  She enjoyed the Twilight books by Stephenie Meyers, and wanted to play in Ms. Meyers’s sandbox.  That’s when she started writing Twilight fanfic. She met some amazing people she’s still friends with through that fandom. There she learned to hone her craft in a way she would not have in a writing class.
Charlotte loves writing high-heat level anything and is currently tending towards LGBTQ+ romance focusing on M/M.  Two (or more) men together is fire.
Charlotte’s advice to the newbie writer, would be to find your people. The ones who will be your cheerleaders while executing a brutal spanking (on your work, get your mind out of the gutter!) People who will both give you valuable help while being honest with you are to be treasured and held close.  Also, more generally, read a lot in the genres you write in to get an idea of what’s out there and what readers expect.  Hone your craft and learn all you can, and expect to write shitty drafts.  That’s how we learn and it’s unavoidable, so embrace it.  Her strengths in writing stem from the fact she is also a professional editor so her work is clean to start with.
Her greatest challenges are writers block and time management.  She states that she needs deadlines and structure.  Currently her creativity has been pretty much non-existent during the *GESTURES WILDLY* all this, but the urge to write is slowing coming back.  She’s doing her best to be kind to herself.
If she had a parrot for a writing partner, it would be an F-word connoisseur. So most likely saying, “What the fuck did I mean when I wrote this?”  Or “What the fuck did I just write?”  Charlotte Black lives in New Mexico, USA.
