Behind the more than 100 researchers at the Stem Cell Institute is a man who works relentlessly to keep the place running smoothly—Jesse Browers. As the Laboratory Services Coordinator, Jesse has almost as many responsibilities as there are chromosomes in a human cell. From fixing equipment to replacing gas cylinders to solving IT issues and ordering supplies, he’s a laboratory operations army of one.
So how is Jesse able to get all his various work done over the course of a day? A large part of the answer, he says, is U Market.
If you have a gas cylinder from the vendor Airgas that you ordered from the old “UStores," U Market would like to save you money. There are still 187 cylinders on campus that meet these criteria. Users are paying 30 cents per day in rent for these cylinders. The rental rate from Matheson, our current contract vendor, is 13 cents per day.
Save yourself some money, return the old cylinders and reorder the same gas on U Market.

MEET THE TEAM
Kristen Berning
As the Sourcing Specialist in Purchasing Services, Kristen Berning acts as the liaison between the University’s Financial System (EFS), the purchasing policy/procedures and the people. She assists University staff and faculty with their questions on purchasing policy, EFS data entry and helps guide requestors through complex U Market transactions.
Kristen is a veteran at the University of Minnesota and began working as a student worker in 1994. She finds motivation each day by passing the knowledge she’s gained onto her co-workers and colleagues.
“When people ask me to describe myself, I usually say I'm a raging extrovert,” Kristen says. “I love learning new things and sharing that knowledge to help others serve the mission of the University.”
