Note from the CEO, January Contreras

What a night! Our one-year anniversary reception last Thursday was a very special evening.  We were overwhelmed by - and grateful for - the many friends and colleagues who celebrated our first year of work opening the doors to the justice system for youth and young adults.
Thanks to the incredible support we received from this fundraising event, Arizona Legal Women And Youth Services (ALWAYS) is stronger and better able to continue to expand free legal services across the state.
Our thanks to our board members, Honorable Barbara Mundell, Dennis Burke, Nancy Baldwin, Beth Rosenberg and Councilman Daniel Valenzuela, for their dedication to making our work and the reception such a success.
During the reception, we took the opportunity to honor three organizations that took the leap of faith to support ALWAYS from day one.  These partnerships have been especially critical to our success.  Please join me in thanking these organizations again:
  • The Hickey Family Foundation  - The foundation’s early and ongoing funding made our work possible from the beginning.
  • The Arizona Foundation for Legal Education and Services – Consistent with their mission to improve access to the justice system, the foundation has served as our fiscal sponsor and continue to help guide us.
  • Tumbleweed Center for Youth Development - Tumbleweed agreed to co-locate ALWAYS in their Phoenix offices, and have been our greatest source of referrals allowing us to design a service model that we can replicate with others.

Below are a few photos of the event.  We also have several photos posted on our FaceBook Page.

In addition to the guests pictured in our photos, there are many supporters who could not attend, but contributed online, and we greatly appreciate their commitment and virtual support of this event!
If you were unable to join us last week, please donate today.  Or if you have feedback, ideas, or questions, please contact me.
As we begin year two, we are counting the blessings that our first year brought us and we look forward to continuing to strengthen our ability to empower young women and men so their voice and stories are heard in the justice system.  Thank you for all that you do to support us.

New Federal Grant to Help ALWAYS Expand to Pima County

ALWAYS is pleased to announce that we are part of a new $500,000 grant from the Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Children and Families (HHS ACF).  The grant to the newly formed Arizona Partnership to End Domestic Trafficking is one of three awards granted nationwide from HHS ACF for this type of work.  Arizona will be center stage with New York and Utah.

ALWAYS is one of five key partners that make-up the Arizona Partnership to End Domestic Trafficking. This group is led by the Tumbleweed Center for Youth Development, along with TRUST, Phoenix Dream Center, and Our Family Services. Additionally, the Arizona State University School of Social Work, Office of Sex Trafficking Intervention Research will participate in this partnership with research and evaluation needs.

Through the Arizona Partnership to End Domestic Trafficking, we will seek to strengthen existing collaborative efforts between agencies, establish seamless service linkage through a coordinated network of victim-centered and trauma-informed services, and to provide comprehensive case management for domestic victims of severe forms of human trafficking in urban Maricopa and Pima Counties.  We look forward to working with public and private partners to take this opportunity to combat trafficking, as well as to strengthen services for trafficking survivors in Arizona.

Can You Help Us With Outreach?

Does your organization serve men and women who are living on their own and under the age of 24?  If so, we are interested in partnering with you.  With your help, we can connect more young adults who are impacted by homelessness, trafficking, or abuse, to free legal services. Please Email us to request referral cards and posters to spread the word about our services.
