New e-newsletter launched...

We're now using a new email newsletter system, which will make it easier to read our newsletters on computers and mobile phones. We hope you find it informative and useful. We've called it @home in the hood and its focus is safe and friendly neighbourhoods.

Get involved in ShakeOut
ShakeOut is a national earthquake drill taking place at 9:15am on 15 October. It’s a chance to practise the right thing to do – Drop, Cover and Hold - and have a bit of fun while doing it.
You can sign up to do the drill as a household, workplace, school, group.or individual. Nationally the aim is to get 1.5 million people taking part. Go to www.shakeout.govt.nz to sign up and get tips and resources.
Locally Civil Defence will be running ShakeOut competitions  - keep an eye on our Facebook page and website for more details.
Community bands together
Cable Bay residents recently formed a Neighbourhood Support group, after a series of thefts. Residents see their new group as a way of preventing further crime. They're also keen to keep building the community spirit which grew after major slips damaged the road into Cable Bay in 2011. Part of the road had to be rebuilt, which took until earlier this year. One of the slips is pictured below. You can read more about that in a recent Nelson Mail article here.

Other new groups have been formed recently in Newall Ave, Toi Toi St and Cheshire Place.
Crime report
A summary of recent burglaries, stolen vehicles and thefts from cars in Nelson is now listed on our website. The data is supplied by the police. You can see it at

Come along to our AGM
Featuring heart-warming neighbourhood stories
We're doing something a little different for our AGM this year. We'll be kicking it off with a ''neighbourhood stories'' session, in which four guests will tell an inspiring, heart-warming or touching story about a neighbourhood close to their heart. Similar to ''couch story'' events held in Nelson, the storytelling will be informal and the stories short. So come along and listen in!
The AGM will follow on from that. Nominations for the committee are welcome - download a nomination form at our website www.nsnelson.org/about-us

When: Monday September 21 @ 7pm
Where: Community meeting room, Nick Smith's offices (upstairs), 544 Waimea Rd. See map.
Events
Workshop for group contacts
We held a workshop for group contacts in June, which proved so worthwhile we're holding another one in October for those who couldn't make the June event. It'll be an opportunity to share ideas and tips on what makes a group run well.
When: Monday October 19, 12-1pm
Where: Activity room, Elma Turner library, Nelson (Invites will be sent out closer to the date)

Treasure trail in The Wood

A community garage sale trail is planned for The Wood on September 19, from 9.30am to 1.30pm. It's a new event and we'll share details on our Facebook page and website as they come to hand.
Pop in to see us at the library
We're at the Elma Turner library on the last Thursday of every month, from 11am to 1pm. Feel free to pop in for a chat, pick up resources, or learn how to access resources on our website.
