Top 10 Music TORONTO Moments in 2015
  1. The return of the legendary Juilliard Quartet in January 2015, revitalized by new first violinist Joseph Lin.
  2. Halifax pianist Barbara Pritchard playing 10 of the Variations on the Aria of Bach’s Goldberg Variations she has commissioned.
  3. The debut of Hungarian pianist Dénes Varjon, who demonstrated something rare — a tangible sense of character in virtually everything he played, with perceptive interpretations of Beethoven, Schumann and Bartók.
  4. The return of sensational young British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor.
  5. The debut of Cuarteto Casals from Spain, who brought a warm, full-bodied tone to Mozart and Ravel, and a focused precision to Kurtag, whom they have championed.
  6. The world premiere of Nicole Lizée’s Isabella Blow at Somerset House with the Cecilia Quartet.
  7. The recital debut of pianist Peter Jablonski, who brought his dexterity and finesse to less familiar repertoire, Szymanowski and Grieg and his unusual balance of power and delicacy to Chopin and Scriabin.
  8. The sensational debut of the Apollon Musagète Quartett, 4 young men from Poland. Is this the greatest string quartet we’ve ever heard? Many in the audience thought so.
  9. Vincent Ho’s Gryphon Dreams, the world premiere of a portrait in sound of the Gryphon Trio.
  10. The Gryphon playing Beethoven.
