Take To The Lakes

On February 25th (3pm EST) we are hosting the first planning meeting for the Great Lakes Commons Journey. RSVP and we will send you the connect info (join by computer or phone).

There is no better way to honour and protect the waters than being in constant contact with them. Take to the lakes this spring, summer, or fall by foot, paddle, bike, sail, or surf.
  • What ceremonies of gratitude can we offer?
  • What harmful water issues can we learn about?
  • What communities can we visit and highlight their struggles or successes?
  • What protocols can we respect and share to show our responsibilities as great ancestors?
  • How can our expressions of hope, grief, and beauty be reflected by a Great Lakes Commons?
  • What collective power can we harness crossing boundaries of place?
Check our website for updates or RSVP to add your plans or curiosity.
We want to thank our newest funder.
A Great Lakes Commons is rising in 2016 thanks to NAPECA.

This summer 2016, Children of the Wild is bringing their opera The Wastelands across the Great Lakes in collaboration with Great Lakes Commons. This is a call to join them and be a carrier of the Commons Charter. Get in touch to find out how you can be part of the action to redefine our relationships to the lakes and to each other. Watch the above video to find out more.

If you have any talents to share and build a Great Lakes Commons, check out our volunteer sign-up form

Sylvia Plain is the founder of the Great Lakes Canoe Journey and is crowdfunding now. This project envisions bringing together the citizens of the Great Lakes Basin on an annual basis by way of canoes to celebrate our relationship to the waterways, to each other, and to learn about Anishinaabe canoe culture and canoe building.

Turning Commons Into Commodities

  • Do you want to keep Nestle out of Elora?
  • Do you think the Ministry of the Environment should actually protect the environment?
  • Are you worried about the effects of industrial water-taking on your well?
  • Are you worried that the water might just run out one day?
Join the water allies at the Elora Legion 7-9PM on Thursday, February 25

Join the groundswell to protect the drinking water for 40 million people. After Flint, don’t let them nuke the Great Lakes next! We must Stop the Great Lakes Nuclear Dump! Canada’s Environment Minister will decide by March 1st at the latest. Urge her and the Prime Minister (yes, even if you’re American) to block Ontario Power Generation’s insane Deep Geologic Repository scheme, to permanently abandon radioactive waste on the Lake Huron shore. Watch the above video.
