SHALOM NEWS PROJECT UPDATES
 SEPT 2017
It's been a busy and productive year at Shalom and we're really excited to update you with some photos and information on some of our new programs and upcoming projects.
NEW TUTORING PROGRAMS
In June we started 2 new tutoring programs in Mulaiyur and Kodankipatti Villages.
Shalom funds tutors' wages, teaching resources, ingredients for snacks to be prepared by village women, stationery items and school project materials for the children.
The new groups have received great support from their communtities with 300+ children now attending our tutoring programs in Errampatti, Valasai, Mulaiyur and Kodankipatti.
Mulaiyur tutoring group meets in the open air beside the home of one of the tutors.
Kodankipatti group meets in a community hall.
Valasai group meets on the street beside the village leader's house.
RESOURCING SCHOOLS
In January we presented furniture and resources to 3 schools.  A storage cupboard and chairs were given to Errampatti Primary School.
Teachers desks, chairs, a cupboard and sporting equipment were given to Valasai Primary - A big thank you to Toogoolawah High students who fundraised for these.
St Paul's Primary School in Palamedu received classroom desks.
EXAM PREP CLASSES
38 students attended our Grade 10 exam prep classes in March - all passed their exams.
SUPPORTING HIGHER STUDIES
11 disadvantaged students were provided with course and boarding fee assistance so they could study university, college and trade courses.
FARMING ACTIVITIES
Rain has been falling and we finally have a farmer on staff.  The vegetable gardens are being planted and we're looking forward to a good harvest.
Corn was planted in May and the roof of the cow shed  was replaced in November.
LEGAL HELP DAY - ERRAMPATTI
We hosted our second Legal Help Day.  Legal Officers from Madurai gave free legal advice and spoke about legal services available to help students and families.
SHALOM CHILDREN'S HOME
June was a busy month with 6 new children taken in and everyone needing uniforms and school equipment for the start of the new school year.
The new gardens are looking great. The courtyard is a popular spot for morning studies.
TOUR BUS HIRE BUSINESS
A mini bus was purchased in November and is being hired out to earn income.
HOUSE CONSTRUCTION BUSINESS
We're also working on a house construction business to create jobs and training opportunities for locals and generate income for the project.
GDG MONITORING VISIT
Global Development Group visited in August to audit the project and were very happy with all the programmes and procedures we had in place.
UPCOMING PROJECTS
The rest of 2017 will be busy with construction projects, farming activities and new tutoring programs.
VALASAI SCHOOL TOILETS
We're getting ready to start work on new toilets for Valasai School.  They'll be similar to these ones we built at Errampatti.
CLASSROOM PAINTING AND FLOOR WORK
We'll also paint and refloor some of the classrooms at Valasai school - Thank you to Toogoolawah High Students who are fundraising to pay for this work.
TUTORING SHELTER - MULAIYUR
Families from Mulaiyur are going to build a shelter for the tutoring group to meet under - we're providing the materials, they'll do the construction work.
BORES FOR WATER
Two new bores for drinking and farming will be put in at Shalom - the government water diviners have done electronic testing and worked out the best places to drill.
GOAT SHELTER AND FENCING WORK
This week work started on a shelter and fenced yard so we can start breeding goats.
UPGRADE TO FARM WORKER'S COTTAGE
Once the goat area is finished the building team will start work on a new bathroom and shade structure to go beside the farm worker's cottage.
TUTORING PROGRAMS
Another two new tutoring programs are being planned with Malaiyur and Arasampatti communities.  They should start by the end of the year.
The photo above shows students from Malaiyur heading home from school.  Their village is located on top of the mountain in the photo and has no road access.

It's been so exciting to go beyond the boundaries of Shalom and start working alongside families, leaders and teachers in other communtities.

This wouldn't be possible without the incredible team we have in India and the encouragement, support and generous giving of many others here in Australia.

Thank you again for your interest and support.  We hope you have been encouraged by all that you have seen and read.
