Events at Hornbeam

Organiclea Jamming Sessions   •   Monday 1st, 8th, 15th   •   2 pm - 5 pm
We will be starting up Jamming sessions again at the Hornbeam Centre, and looking for volunteers to come and help create jams, preserves, chutneys, cordials, flavoured vinegars, oils and perhaps even some fancy kale chips using surplus produce from Organiclea. These sessions will be led by a sessional worker and aim to give volunteers skills in jam and preserve making as well as how to deal with seasonal gluts by turning fruit and vegetables into jars of delicious goodness. Space is limited to about 5 per session and priority will be given to Organiclea and Hornbeam volunteers, so please let us which sessions you would like to attend.

Community Mondays   •   Monday 1st December   •   10.00 am - 1.00 pm
Let’s get Christmassy! Help us bring the festive spirit into the café. Get inspired and learn different ways to use recycled materials to create decorations with a personal touch that you could make at home. In this session there will be demos on how to make recycled Christmas decorations and time to make decorations. At the end we will decorate the café together, before enjoying a free lunch.

Tiny Tempo   •   Thursday 4th, 11th, 18th   •   9.30am - 11.30am
Join The Tiny Tempo Team for a fun introduction to musical concepts-using singing, instrument playing, listening and dancing! With guitars, ukuleles, and a lot of energy, fun is had by all. £5 for one child, £8 for two children. 9.30am start for under 18 months and 10.30 start for 18 months and older.

Life Classes   •   Sunday 7th and 21st   •   3pm - 5pm
This is a wonderful opportunity on alternate Sundays to make original art in front of a life model. You only have to bring yourself (and a sketchbook if you wish to take notes) as all materials will be provided. These classes will be taught by Jonathan Ellis, an experienced, enthusiastic and encouraging teacher. Every class starts with a short slideshow to introduce that week’s theme, followed by drawing exercises in a variety of media. Advance booking essential at or text 07980713819.

Waltham Forest Cycling Campaign  •  Wednesday 10th  •  8pm - 9.15pm
Join us for a discussion on cycling issues, opportunities, and upcoming events on the second Weds each month. Everyone is welcome and we appreciate all contributions. We usually go to a nearby pub after the meeting . Click here for more information about us.

Supper Club - Winter Feast   •  Friday 12th December  •  7 pm – late
Please join us for a special vegan six-course meal. Our focus for the evening is on beautiful locally grown vegetables using some interesting techniques to create new and delicious flavours and textures. Winter Market   •  Saturday 13th December  •  10 am - 5 pm
The market stall gets festive, selling gift possibilities like hand-made chutneys, pickles, jams, juice and vinegar as well as organic and ultra-local sustainably grown fruit and vegetables and homemade bread. The café will be serving up yuletide treats and hot spiced cider.‘The Paint Place shop will have some crafty gift ideas for sale including planters, benches and chalkboards all made from re-claimed materials. Festive Crafts and Little Library Launch -   •  Sunday 14th December  •  5 pm – 5 pm
Make beautiful Christmas cards using scrap materials. Bring a book you once loved and gift it to our little library which is open to the whole community.

New Lammas Lands Defence Committee   •  Thursday 18th  •  8pm – 10pm
We meet on the third Thursday of each month. Our aim is to defend the former Lammas Lands of Leyton and Walthamstow Marshes, so that they remain public open space in perpetuity.

OrganicLea market stall  •   Saturday 6th, 13th, 20th  •  10am - 3pm
Located right outside the Hornbeam Centre on Saturdays, the market stall sells organic and ultra-local sustainably grown fruit and vegetables, plus homemade bread, jams and preserves. It’s a buzzing space, where buying fresh produce is an enjoyable activity and where information about food can be freely shared.  Healthy Start vouchers can be used to buy fruit and vegetables at the stalls or box scheme. Under 5’s Nature Explorers   •   Wednesday 3rd   •   10am - 1pm
Join us for FREE adventures and activities in Lloyd Park for under 5s and their parents/carers on the first Weds each month. We will start the day with a fun ramble around the park searching for items around our monthly theme. There will then be activities and story time until 12pm. Hot drinks and healthy snacks will be available during and after the activities. These sessions are free and booking is recommend to avoid disappointment. Save Lea Marshes is a group of individuals who are campaigning to ensure that all the Lower Lea Valley marshes - Tottenham Marsh, Walthamstow Marsh, Leyton Marsh and Hackney Marshes - remain open and green. Sourdough Bread Baking for Beginners  •   Sunday 14th   •   11 am - 4 pm
Using sourdough culture is an ancient method of making bread. Come and learn the basics of this wonderful technique to bake incredibly nutritious and tasty loaves. You will learn to make sourdough starters and production leavens and experiment with different doughs. By the end of the workshop your own handmade sourdough loaf will be ready to take home together with your own starter for future baking, recipes and a handful of new skills. Waltham Forest Cycling Campaign Monthly Ride   •   Sunday 28th   •   10am - 3pm
We meet every fourth Sunday of the month at 10am at Walthamstow Library for a 10:15am start. We have a few routes lined up and usually decide distance and destination on the day according to what people prefer. We ride leisurely suited to the wishes of participants. We usually stay within 30 miles and sometimes considerably shorter. We tend to be back by 3pm and always have a snack stop somewhere. Contact Robert

Our established Biodiversity Action Team (BAT) helps manage some of Waltham Forest’s most beautiful and vibrant sites for nature conservation.  Help improve your local green spaces through a wide range of activities including; woodland management, habitat creation, pond maintenance and some environmental construction.  With practical sessions every day there are plenty of opportunities to join in, meet new people, learn new skills and discover hidden green spaces while improving your health and stamina. Community Mondays

The Hornbeam is beginning a new programme of Community Mondays - where we throw our doors open to community activities. Forest Recycling Project

Thanks to our team of volunteers, Forest Recycling Project (FRP) diverted over 10 tonnes of paint from waste streams last year. Could you help us to do even better next year?
Volunteering with FRP provides an opportunity to learn about our innovative paint re-use project, help the environment and provide people with access to affordable paint.
At FRP we need volunteers to help run our shop and warehouse, as well as to help us deliver special projects. Join our team to learn new skills, help FRP grow and make a visible difference in the community.

Organiclea - help us feed Waltham Forest!
  • Veg Box Packers: Every week a team of volunteers helps us to pack local, organic veg bags for box scheme customers all over Waltham Forest.  Packing takes place on Wednesdays 10.30am-3pm.
  • Horticultural Assistant: The growing season has started at Hawkwood, we welcome volunteers of all levels of experience to help with all aspects of the market garden on Wednesdays 11am-4pm, Fridays 11am-4pm and Tuesdays 1.30-4.30pm.
  • Stalls Volunteers: Help out on our sociable Saturday market stall outside the Hornbeam Cafe in Walthamstow. Volunteers commit to a monthly shift on the stall or provide occasional cover  as needed.
