The Recreational Fisheries and Aquatic Environment Forum has been established to help the MEPs understand what can be complex issues affecting 25 million EU angling constituents.

EAA General Assembly
European Anglers met in Denmark for the annual General Assembly

During this three-day event, constructive discussions on important sea and freshwater issues took place, including EU management measures to come later this year concerning sea bass and Baltic cod, the effects of hydropower on the state of EU rivers and biodiversity and the implementation of the Water Framework Directive. Besides these discussions, the representatives could listen to some inspiring presentations about the work of the Danish association, the promotion of angling tourism, the development of an electronic anglers’ logbook, actions done on river restoration and the latest revision of Denmark's cormorant management plan.

Angling in Romania
EAA/EFTTA delegation invited to Romania to promote sustainable recreational fisheries


An EAA/EFTTA delegation will be travelling to Bucharest and the Danube delta on the 7th and 8th October 2016 to meet the Romanian local angling and environmental associations to share information and discuss about sustainable recreational angling. This trip is organised by Mrs. Norica Nicolai, the Romanian Member of the European Parliament who chairs the Recreational Fisheries and Aquatic Environment Forum since its creation in 2014. 

Two events will be organised during this trip.

Meet the anglers # 9 : Ribiška zveza Slovenije - The Fishing Association of Slovenia

The Fishing Association of Slovenia, Ribiška zveza Slovenije, is the umbrella organisation of Slovenian freshwater fishermen. It incorporates 64 angling clubs with almost 12.000 members across the country.

The association was founded in 1880 and it has always been committed to preserve the tradition of Slovenian freshwater fishing to pass it down to the future generations. The Angling Clubs are responsible for the management of Slovenian freshwaters on behalf of the State. Another big part of the work of the Association is dedicated to professional training for fishermen and, even more important, for youngster and school kids.

Implementing the EU Water Framework Directive

A recent study has analysed research on implementing the Water Framework Directive in Europe and identified a number of research gaps that could be filled. For example, Eastern European countries have not been well studied and more research would build up knowledge on the implementation of the WFD across Europe.

EP Question on the implementation of the Water Framework Directive

MEP Jasenko Selimovic asked the Commission an important question on the implementation of the Water Framework Directive:
" [...] owing to the significant gaps in implementation of the directive, what further steps does the Commission envisage to take in order to ensure that all waters in the EU meet the ‘good’ ecological status laid down by the directive?"

EAA members - Angling Trust

Angling Trust launches campaign to fight IUU fishing
A cutting-edge initiative to help tackle fisheries related crime has been launched by the Angling Trust in partnership with the Environment Agency. ‘Angling Alert’ is a web-based communication tool that will provide anglers and the wider public with information on fisheries crime quickly – by text or email.
