RecFishing Forum launched in the European Parliament to strengthen the voice of 25 million EU anglers in Brussels


On the 25th of March, the Forum on Recreational Fisheries and Aquatic Environment was launched in the European Parliament. The launch event, entitled “Why do we need to talk about Recreational Fisheries in the European Parliament? Economics, Environment and Rural Development”, was the first occasion for the several Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) present to exchange opinions with the representatives of the European Anglers Alliance (EAA) and the European Fishing Tackle Trade Association (EFTTA). 

The event was chaired by the President of the Forum, MEP Norica Nicolai (Romania, ALDE).

Driftnet ban proposal to be voted in the PECH Committee

EAA supports the European Commission's proposal for a driftnet ban in all EU waters. In view of the vote in the PECH Committee that has been delayed, the European Anglers ask that any new technical measures that may be voted include provisions to manage drift net fisheries better.

Council adopts measures to help sea bass to recover 

The Council has adopted measures to help sea bass recover. For recreational fishing, the decision will mean the introduction of a limit of three fish per day per angler. The limit on recreational catches complements the measures which the EC adopted earlier this year on pelagic fisheries.

Nutrient pollution in Dutch streams is falling, but further reductions needed   

Nutrient pollution in The Netherlands is falling as a result of national and EU policies, new research has shown. However, many waters still routinely fail to meet environmental quality standards. The study showed that up to 76% of rivers did not meet water quality standards.
