In Memory of Our Past President

The Arc of Pennsylvania Announces
The MJ Bartelmay, Jr.
Excellence in Advocacy Award

MJ Bartelmay, Jr. was the proud father of a young man (MJ III) with significant disabilities and on his behalf, MJ has lived a life of service for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  He served various positions at the local, state, and national Arc level.  His lifetime was dedicated to service on behalf of, and alongside people with disabilities and their families.  In each position, MJ served with distinction and grace.

Named in his honor, MJ is the first recipient of the MJ Bartelmay, Jr. Excellence in Advocacy Award, a lifetime achievement award provided to a person that demonstrates a lifetime of leading the way for people with disabilities and their families.  This award was presented to MJ, prior to his passing.  This award recognizes MJ’s extraordinary spirit, and his accomplishments in systemic advocacy at the local, state, and/or national level, resulting in positive outcomes for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  In years to come, the MJ Bartelmay Excellence in Advocacy Award will be awarded to an individual who has shown the level of commitment and service to The Arc of PA as MJ gave to our organization and a person that exemplifies his legacy.

Gone from our sight, but never from our hearts, The Arc of Pennsylvania expresses sincere sympathy at the passing of our friend and mentor, Merton John “M.J.” Bartelmay, Jr.,  from Hermitage, PA.  He died on Sunday, July 5, 2020.   M.J. is survived by son M.J. III, and son, Charles (Rachel); his father, Merton J. Bartelmay, Sr.; his brothers, Randy (Tina) and Brad (Sherri), six nieces and nephews, and his ex-wife, Theresa Allen.  MJ worked in the Information Technology field primarily as a system/database analyst.

MJ served as a passionate advocate in the disability community, serving at the local, state, and national Arc movement.  He was a past President of The Arc of Pennsylvania, which, along with The Arc United States, is the largest national community-based organization advocating for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. He served as Treasurer and Secretary of The Arc of the United States and as President of The Arc of Mercer County.  At the time of his death, he was serving another term on The Arc of PA’s Board of Directors.
The Arc of PA President Sarah Holland stated, “MJ will be remembered for his wonderful and gentle soul and will forever remain in our hearts.  The Arc of PA has been greatly touched and influenced by his commitment to enhancing the rights of people with intellectual land developmental disabilities to live lives of inclusion and meaning.”

A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date.  Memorials may be given to The Arc of Pennsylvania, 1007 Mumma Road, Suite 100, Lemoyne, PA 17043.
MJ wished to leave us with his favorite scripture which helped him though the challenges of life:  Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. – 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
