Black Box Dance Theatre
The PTA's last cultural arts performance of the year will be Friday, March 8th 9:30 for grades 3-5.  Black Box Dance Theatre is a Raleigh-based company whose school performances show a range from pure athleticism to celebration of cultural practices.  In addition to enjoying a stunning performance, students will learn about the history of modern dance and how it is one of the only art forms created in America.  They will also learn how to "dance" a written paragraph, the physics of lifting with ease and how to interpret a story without any words at all.  Parents and tracked out families are welcome to attend!  Many thanks to the grant funding from the United Arts Council and their support through the Artists in Schools program.

Our PTA wouldn't exist without our amazing board members!  For the upcoming school year we will have 4-6 board positions open.  Board members help keep things running smoothly by working with other parent volunteers who organize each individual event, program, activity, etc.  If you'd be interested in learning more or would like to hop on board, please contact Ellen Wentz at ellen.h.wentz@gmail.com.

POSITION: VP of Student Affairs
2018-19 BOARD MEMBER: Rupa Patel
AREAS OF SERVICE:  This board position helps manage so many of the special events we are proud to offer our students throughout the school year.  This includes grade-specific traditions such as the Kindergarten Parent Breakfast and the Fifth Grade Celebration, and fun programs that all students get to enjoy, including Run Club, Field Day, Tasty Tuesday and the annual Heroes Luncheon. Student Affairs also oversees the school's Yearbook and collaborates with that team to produce this special collection of photos and memories.

WHAT LED YOU TO BECOME ACTIVE ON THE PTA?:  I wanted to get more involved and understand what was happening at my children's school.  I wanted to help and make a difference in our community.  My children take pride and enjoy seeing me come to school and help put on programs and events.

WHAT IS AN ACHIEVEMENT OF THE PTA OF WHICH YOU'VE BEEN PROUD TO BE A PART?  Helping with fundraisers and Family Fun Nights.  Bringing technology into the classrooms and again being able to socialize with other families outside of the school day.

WHAT IS ONE WORD YOU'D USE TO DESCRIBE THE CARPENTER PTA?Amazing!

Position: Nominating Committee Chair
2018-19 Board Member:  Ellen Wentz
AREAS OF SERVICE:  The nominating committee is responsible for talking to involved parents and finding those who want to become a part of the Board.  The committee presents the slate of PTA board members for the upcoming school year to be voted on by the general membership.

WHEN DID YOU JOIN THE PTA BOARD?  I joined when our oldest was a first grader, so I have been on the board for 8 years! This is my last year as our youngest will start middle school next year.

AS A LONG-TIME MEMBER OF THE BAORD, WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU OFFER TO NEW MEMBERS?  Choose a position that aligns with your strengths and interests!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT THE CARPENTER PTA?  Serving our school with other dedicated parents who are as passionate about Carpenter as I am and want to see every student be successful and feel a sense of belonging at Carpenter.

Read Across America
This year Carpenter will be participating in Read Across America, a national initiative to encourage a love for reading.  Mrs. Alston will be leading a program called "Community Reads," and she needs your help!  She would like to invite professionals from our local community to come into the classrooms to read for 20-30 minutes and talk about why reading is necessary and important for their jobs.  We would love to see as many working Carpenter parents as possible come in to their child(ren)'s classrooms to read and talk with the students.  "Community Reads" for Tracks 1, 3 & 4 will be the week of March 4-8; Track 2 will be the week of March 11-15.  You can coordinate with your child's teacher to select a day and time that works with your and your teacher's scheduleAny professionals in the area are welcome, regardless of whether or not they have a student at Carpenter, so put the word out to your friends and neighbors!  All questions can be directed to Mrs. Alston at salston5@wcpss.net.

Thank You!
The PTA has had a lot going on lately and we'd like to thank many of our volunteers who keep the machine running!  Thanks to Adam Short for his great work on this year's Science Expo.  We had a great turnout and loved seeing the love for science among our students.  We'd also like to thank our recent picture day helpers:  Payel Mukharjee, Hameeda Hassan Asif, Sandy Fogelman, Megha Jain-Tailor and Rupa Patel.  Thank you all for helping to keep those days running smoothly!  And finally, a shout out goes to LuAnne DeSantis for keeping our PTA calendar updated on our website on a regular basis.  Carpenter truly has the BEST parents!!!!
