"Teacher Enrichment Programme" : One year in-service Course for school teachers by Anubhava Science Foundation and Karnataka State Council for Science & Technology

New year greetings from Anubhava Science Foundation!
May the goodwill of 2017 bestow health, peace and lots of happiness on everyone!

November month update

Made by a teacher as part of one of the assignments
Mr. Mahesh taking a session on green house gases

Before getting into the colourful world of acids and bases, of distinct tastes and smell, the class was made to think critically and ask themselves, 'why acids and bases?' What is special about them? Why study them?

Teachers inevitably threw words picked up from the textbooks, ranging from reactions to litmus papers, etc. Advising them to think outside textbooks, Anubhava's faculty led them to the starting point of reactants and products, their distinctly varying properties and the need for categorisation. Number of experiments were done to demonstrate the different types of reactions with acids and bases.

Continuing in the same vein from previous sessions of exploring the science of life, the session looked at ways to enrich the body by adopting an alkaline diet, and saw a list of food items that are alkaline forming and acid forming.

In addition to the two distinct categories of acids and bases, the day also saw a different category arise -- that of the class.  When the entire class was asked as to how many would want to drop out of the course at this stage if permission was given, few participants chose to opt out of the year-long course for various reasons and the rest sticking on, despite constraints.
Whether the reasons were weak or Anubhava's faculty persuasion strong, those few 'doubtfuls' changed their mind by the end of the session. They pledged to continue despite pressures at work, health, non-cooperation by headmasters, etc.

The day began with a presentation by KSCST consultant Mahesh Kashyap on climate change, its implications and possible mitigations. It concluded with a discussion on past worksheets in Maths followed by a short exam on the topics covered so far.

Teachers would be taking the forthcoming sessions on topics like pollution,  energy, soil, heat and temperature, etc. They would be assisted by the ASF faculty in the same. Teachers who will be presenting their work in the next two sessions, have put on their thinking caps and are working on creating their chosen module. They have been receiving on- call support from Anubhava faculty, who are helping them with the flow and the mind maps.

For various reasons like census, school trips and some teachers were on leave being the year end, the scheduled session in December was postponed and a 2- day session will be held in January 2017.

Acknowledgements

'Intel Involved Social Initiative' contest is one of its kind for Intel India Employees, where an Employee would team up with an NGO of their own choice and present a proposal. Santosh N and Venkataraghavan P from Intel collaborated with ASF and presented the proposal for which ASF received the Intel Involved MATCHING GRANT. ASF would like to thank the Intel Corporation for its support.

Anubhava workshops at Sansera Foundation

Science and Math workshops were held for a group of 15 teachers at 'Sansera Foundation' in November and December this year. The sessions were held for government school teachers belonging to 'Anekal' block. During the month of November, the science session was based on atoms, elements and compounds; and the math session, on polygons and circles. Force & motion in science, area & perimeter in math were the covered topics in December. The sessions were well received by the teachers and they expressed the great need to go through such kind of science and math trainings for all the topics.

Teacher Enrichment Programme

Teacher Enrichment programme is a one year course launched by ASF in collaboration with KSCST for in-service middle school government and aided science teachers to enrich teaching-learning of science focusing on the subject matter in depth, pedagogy of science teaching, creation of science curricular resources and science of life.

Anubhava Science Foundation (ASF) is a charitable trust registered in 2008. ASF envisions to enrich Science and Mathematics education in Karnataka schools. ASF has been granted 80(G)(vi)(Act 1961) enabling donors to claim income tax benefits.

My Anubhava

When the teachers were given an option to quit the course and were also assured that permission would be facilitated by Anubhava, 9 out of 42 of them wanted to exercise the option momentarily. Quoted below are some of the reactions of the majority, who believed otherwise. “why are you giving us this option? We are happy about our learning", "things are going so well. What did we do wrong that made you think of this?", "the natural tendency of teachers is to exercise such an option when provided, considering their hectic schedule", "it is a waste of time to discuss this. We are all attending the course despite us facing so many challenges and we would definitely like to continue”.

Anubhava threw this option with a clear objective to understand the difficulties being faced by the teachers, and address them soon. Actions were taken to address the challenges which enabled 7 out of the 9 teachers to continue the course.
