"Teacher Enrichment Programme" : One year in-service Course for school teachers by Anubhava Science Foundation and Karnataka State Council for Science & Technology

October month update

October month had 3 day sessions and saw vindication of Anubhava's attempt to go beyond mere sessions on textbook science.

The organisation's stated objective of 'exploring and experiencing the science of life' is part of this belief that school education must address aspects of science encompassing everyday life, be it on food, health, sustainable living, climate, natural farming or the body and mind connections in a meaningful and practical way.

An appeal from ASF

"Teacher Enrichment Programme", a year long science course being implemented for 45 government school teachers which positively impacts approximately 5000 children every year. ASF is looking for funds to meet the project cost. We welcome any Corporate willing to fund this project fully or partly. Individuals passionate are welcome to make a donation directly to the bank account. Sec 80 G exemption available.

Day 1 of the 3 - day session in October saw teachers view the video by a renowned Scientist, Homeopathic Doctor, a unique farmer Dr. Khader, who holds a Ph.D degree in Steroids from IIsc. The 2- hour long video took them through the meaning of ‘good food’, how digestion takes place in the body, how slow production of glucose is essential and how our everyday food involving rice, wheat produce glucose in quick bursts thereby causing more damage than help to us. The focus of the talk was on how to maintain good health devoid of the common ailments and diseases by means of a well- balanced diet and exercise regime, instead of looking at treatments once the illness has set in. He suggested a diet of millets that are rich in fibre and provide hydration to the walls of the intestine and also produce glucose at a slow pace, making it a very healthy option, combined with about an hour and 15 minutes of walking every day.
Teachers listened with rapt attention. The video was followed by a reflection session with a list of doubts and questions as the outcome. Dr. Khader was kind enough to agree to address teachers and clear their doubts over the phone.

The math session covered lines and angles through real- life examples and a focus on the concepts rather than the names.

The second day session in October was really special because the main topic was electricity conducted by the well-known educationalist Prof. D.R. Baluragi. He began his session by asking a simple question, “All of us know that a Joule is a unit of energy. How do we experience how much a joule is? “This was the philosophy behind all the concepts he taught – how do we get a complete understanding and actually get a concrete feel for all that we learn instead of it being just an abstraction?

Mr Baluragi’s session was characterized by these factors that made it indeed memorable – he interspersed his teaching with jokes and kept everyone on their toes by asking leading questions. Further, abstruse concepts were explained with down-to-earth experiments many of them using simple contraptions that he has designed and built in a very neat and meticulous manner. The positive energy with which he conducted the session belied his age which is on the wrong side of 70.

After the correction and thorough analysis of the testpapers, assignments of the previous 7 topics covered over the past five months, the Anubhava faculty had identified the exact sub-topics where the majority of the teachers were having conceptual understanding problems and revised the topics through questioning and mindmap creations addressing the difficulties of teachers.

Day three started with a math session on Polygons and Circles. The objective was to bring out the properties of polygons- particularly quadrilaterals, and circles informally through activities and concentrate on understanding of the underlying concept rather than the names given to various terms, bringing along their connect to daily life.

The day saw a twist in the proceedings. Teachers, much like their students, kept asking for the first term exams to be put off, but Anubhava did not relent. The facilitators had a card up their sleeve. Instead of writing down answers, the 'teacher students' were asked to pen questions! The more creative and indirect the queries, the better. The open notes exam saw the teachers write down questions without discussion.

That was one task over. Next, the question papers were redistributed so that none got their own paper. It was time to answer, but this time without help from notes. Teachers were surprised to find that it was more difficult to set creative questions than answer them! This in fact was what ASF was aiming at -- to make teachers learn as students and empower them as teachers.

It was also time to check if teachers had procured the materials required for every topic. So far, ASF had supplied materials for topics covered so far. The enthusiasm was evident by the fact that most teachers submitted their field projects that were assigned a month back..

The day ended with a session on alternative building technology by Prof. Monto Mani from Centre for Sustainable technologies department, IISc. Teachers were engrossed as he explained the theory in brief about various kinds of construction, the concept of load bearing in each case and also the cost factor, durability, etc. Monto then took them around the building to show some of the technologies implemented in and around the hall where the workshop is being conducted. The audience wanted contact details of experts who could be approached for building sustainable homes.

With the culmination of the first half of the teacher enrichment course, teachers were informed that the rest of the course would focus more on their effort, creative skills and presentation, in addition to sessions by ASF faculty. It is time to take over.
