Volunteer Profile : May 2015
Thank you to Shania K for her dedication and passion while volunteering on CCASA's 24-hr Support and Information phone line. Here's what she had to say about her time with us.
I first heard about CCASA through another volunteer opportunity, and instantly knew it was an organization I wanted to be a part of. I felt it was very important to get involved with this community, and I’m glad I did. My favourite part of working with CCASA is the moment during calls when the caller is able to point out their strengths. Working with such a variety of people in such a variety of situations; it’s inspiring to hear their stories and triumphs, whether that be their decision to report, telling a loved one, or finally putting themselves first.
It’s great being able to support and be there for someone going through a difficult situation. It makes the work even better, however, knowing that as a volunteer, I have the support of Mary and the CCASA staff, whether I need to debrief a call or get some extra information.
I have just finished my first year of my social work diploma! It’s been a very interesting year and I’m loving it. After my bachelor’s I hope to get a Master’s degree. I would love to work internationally or with at-risk or sexually exploited youth.
I am also extremely interested in music. I love going to concerts and festivals with my friends. I think the best concert I’ve ever been to was Arcade Fire in Montreal. I also try my very best to play the guitar and ukulele. Someday, I want to learn to play the autoharp. Other than that, I spend a lot of time reading. My favourite author is a Canadian named Heather O’Neill. Her books The Girl Who Was Saturday Night and Lullabies for Little Criminals are amazing!
