CalFresh EBT

Did you know that CalFresh EBT is accepted at the farmers' market?

Read all about the program in our special feature below and go check out their booth at the market!

The CSU, Chico Research Foundation – Center for Healthy Communities was awarded: $250,000 through USDA, FNS, FMSSG (Farmers' Market SNAP Support Grant). It is a 3 year project - first year in Butte County (in partnership with the 5 Chico Certified Farmers' Markets, 2 in Chico, 2 in Paradise, and 1 in Oroville). During the 2nd and 3rd year, the project will expand to Colusa, Glenn, Tehama, and Siskiyou Counties.

The CalFresh EBT at Farmers’ Market project will use funds to develop and implement a CalFresh outreach and marketing campaign which includes (1) purchasing CalFresh EBT signage and other supplies, (2) providing when applicable training to farmers' market staff on CalFresh operations and program strategies, (3) hosting market walks to promote EBT use at the market, and (4) cooking demonstrations/tastings to encourage eating more fruits and vegetables from market farmers.

The key goal of the CalFresh EBT at Farmers' Market grant is to make sure that families and individuals who receive CalFresh EBT benefits understand that they can “spend” them at farmers' markets to buy fresh vegetables and fruits, fish, eggs, meat, cheese, olive oil, and other eligible items, including food-producing plant “starts” and seeds. Increased usage of CalFresh EBT benefits at the market expands the range of retail options for everyone who receives CalFresh benefits, supports local farmers, and encourages people to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables.
