Welcoming a New Face at La Posada

Sister Bertshabe Palomino Montalvo, CDP
Welcoming a New Face at La Posada:

My name is Bertshabe Palomino Montalvo, a Sister of Divine Providence. I am originally from Perú and have been living in the United States as a member of my religious community for seven years. Six years ago I had an unforgettable experience as a volunteer for three months at La Posada. Because of that experience, I decided to come back. However, this time I plan to volunteer for longer than three months.

Not only did I want to come back because my past visit was so impressionable, but also I want to help the Sisters in my community continue to do the work of “Welcoming the Stranger.” I also really enjoy talking and sharing with the guests at La Posada, helping to provide them with moral support, which I consider they need while transitioning to a new culture.

The clients are people from different cultures who come to this country mostly fleeing from difficult situations in their homelands. They arrive at La Posada with no material things; instead they bring other riches. I learn every day from them, specifically about different ways of being courageous and taking risks, which has helped me in my personal life and professional career.

I am excited to be working with the clients again; I am enjoying tutoring the clients in the ESL (English as a Second Language) program and I look forward to what my time here at La Posada will bring.

Clients Celebrate 4th of July

July 4th or Independence Day is a special day at La Posada because of the significance it holds for our clients.  It’s a holiday that celebrates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the newly formed United States. It is particularly meaningful because of the freedom that came along with that independence. For our clients, that is the most special part of the day.

To honor the holiday and its meaning, the clients, who represented 9 different countries, gathered and held hands in a circle around the flag pole. As the flag was being raised, they recited the Pledge of Allegiance and reflected on the importance of the day.

Our clients travel from all parts of the world to experience the freedom that America offers. It is that idea of living the American dream in the land of the free that drives them to make what is often a perilous journey from their homeland to the United States.

“It is such an inspiring site to see people from 9 different countries in one place, holding hands, reciting the pledge of allegiance and paying respect to the United States flag,” said Volunteer Coordinator, Adriana Garcia

While the meaning of July 4th is important and celebrated by Americans, it is equally important to the immigrants who come to America in search of that freedom which is celebrated.
