Fellow parents and guardians,
We hope you're having a fantastic summer. It's hard to believe, but school starts in one week! The PTO is reaching out to share some of what you can expect on the first day of school, Thursday, September 5th and more. We are offering up some information to help you prepare for next week and the school year. Principal Rodriguez, AP Sidbury, AP St. Juste, Ms. Collie Cyrus and more have been working hard this summer to prepare our school for a warm welcome!

Every incoming Pre-K and Kindergarten child will receive a letter from 282 with a class assignment. 

IMPORTANT: If you HAVE NOT received a letter by next Tues, please email Ms. Collie Cyrus in the main office for assistance PRIOR to the first day of school: Due to a delay with the DOE, the assignments were delayed this year so please wait to contact until next Tuesday.

With many students in the building, drop-off can be intimidating for new families, so on the first day of school, drop off is slightly altered from typical routine so you are eased into the controlled chaos!

On Thursday, September 5th, arrival will be organized as follows:


Location: Pre-K students will convene in the Pre-K yard (the small playground with the mural, accessible via the ramp entrance off of Berkeley Place between 5th and 6th Avenues) and enter the classrooms through the doors.

Time: The first day of school is Thursday, September 5th, 2019. Our schedule and early dismissal on the first two days of school will be the following:

On Thursday, September 5th parents may remain with their child for their first time in the classroom.  Dismissal for PreK students will begin at 11:30 pm.

Last names beginning with A to L: Arrive at 8:20 A.M. Dismissal at 10:20 A.M.

Last names beginning with M to Z: Arrive at 10:30 A.M. Dismissal at 12:00 P.M. 

Our first full day of school will be on Monday, September 9th, 2019PreK Students will dismiss from their classrooms beginning at 2:20pm.

What to bring: Lunch bag (not a book bag for snacks), a change of clothes in a labeled ziploc bag and a crib size sheet for their cot.  Pre k students take a nap during the day.

Pre-K arrival and drop off location will remain the same (at the classroom door off the Pre-K yard) every day for the rest of the school year. 


Location: Kindergarten students will assemble in the auditorium. Please use the main entrance of the school (180 6th Avenue); the auditorium will be directly to your left. Teachers will be there with signs indicating where each class should gather.

Time: On the first day only (Thursday, September 5th), Kindergarten students will arrive at 8:20 am, to allow for all upper grade students to clear the hallways first.

Notes: Starting on Friday September 6, 2019, Kindergarten students will arrive at the usual time ----->

  • Line-up begins at 8:10 am; teachers will meet class groups at 8:20 am to take them to their classroom.
  • Parents can come join the meet-and-greet in the auditorium – after drop-off.
  • On the first day of school only (September 5), Kindergarten students will be dismissed early at 12 noon from the lobby/main entrance (180 6th Avenue). Unless there is a half day, dismissal for the remainder of the year will be at 2:30 pm at the main entrance.
  • Parents should plan to come to the classroom (if you want to) on the first morning but only stay a short time so that the teacher can start bonding with the kids after the initial meet and greet. Those of us with nervous or shy children should prepare them for the fact that parents or "grown-ups" will likely not be staying all morning.
  • What to bring: Backpacks are optional on the first day, but you should pack a lunch for your child if you are not participating in the school lunch program. If you have already purchased them, you can bring classroom supplies on the first day. It is also essential for the Kindergarteners to bring a complete change of clothes (including underwear and socks!) in a labeled Ziploc bag that will be stored in the classroom in case of emergencies.
Grades 1-5 and 8 have a full day schedule every day beginning September 5

Arrival Location :: 282 Auditorium (just to the left after entering the building via the main entrance at 180 6th Avenue)
Time: 8:20 am 

Dismissal Location :: Exit D&E located at the bottom of the ramp off Berkeley Place between 5th and 6th Avenues
Time: 2:30 pm.

Arrival Location :: 282 Gymnasium (straight ahead past the security desk after entering the building via the main entrance at 180 6th Avenue)
Time: 8:20 am 

Dismissal Location :: Exit G located on Lincoln Place just off 6th Avenue
Time: 2:35 pm

Arrival Location :: Basketball Courts located behind school off Lincoln Place between 5th and 6th Avenues
Time: 8:20 am

Dismissal Location :: Exit F (same location as arrival, directly into the basketball courts)
Time: 2:40 pm

Students in K through 8th Grade, may arrive at 7:40am for drop-off in the cafeteria, where they will be served breakfast. If you are dropping off your child early, you should enter through the main doors (180 6th Avenue) and take your child downstairs to the cafeteria on the lower level.

The cafeteria is chaperoned between 7:40 and 8:15. Students will be brought upstairs after breakfast to gather with their classes in the appropriate line-up location for each grade.

For PreK - There is no early drop off. If you wish to coordinate coverage for PreK students for an early drop off program, you should speak with the school administration to see if that could be arranged.

At this time 282 has a generic supply list for all grades (see attached), but it is subject to change, as teachers generally add to that list on the first day. In our experience as parents, we recommend waiting to purchase most supplies until after you have consulted with your child's teacher.
The first few days, especially for younger students, are spent getting to know each other, new routines, the classroom and school – kids aren’t missing out on anything for lack of supplies.

While details are still being finalized, below is a list of enrichment specials that 282 students MAY experience in the first or second semester. (Please note, not every grade will receive every enrichment--please check with your child’s teacher to find out their weekly class schedule)
  • Spanish
  • Visual Arts
  • Literacy through Technology 
  • Creative Expression (Theatre Arts)
  • Rhythmic Exploration (Movement)
  • Gym
  • Music
  • Science
282 will have after school programs (all independent organizations not run by PTO and subject to change) operating on site/remotely this fall. After School programs do not start until September 9th. Check with your provider. 

If your child is part of an afterschool program on-site at the school, they will be brought to the auditorium by their teacher and collected by their program. You should ensure your teacher knows which after-school program your child is registered with, so they know where to drop them when school ends. Your child will be brought back to the auditorium for you to collect at the end of the day. If your child is part of an afterschool program off-site you should agree where/when they will collect your child from and where you should pick them up, directly with the program.

Other organizations may also do pick-up from 282 (for example, Congregation Beth Elohim or Beansprouts)-- please check with your preferred after school program to find out if they will pick up from 282.

If you plan on busing your child and have not already done so, you should reach out to Ms. Collie Cyrus to find out options for bus routes and pick up locations near you. However, the DOE system can take time, which means that if you are new to the process, you should not depend on busing for the first week or more of school and should plan for other modes of transportation.

If you will be driving your child to school, please keep in mind that 6th Avenue is under construction, and traffic is currently moving only one way, in the direction from Flatbush to PS 282! This will make it easier for school buses to drop off students, but cars are prohibited from standing in front of the school. Make arrangements to drop your child off on Lincoln or Berkeley Place.

Please also be aware that double-parked cars on Lincoln and Berkeley Place can block in residents and cause congestion. Curb-side drop-off is ideal; if your student is too young to walk to the entrance alone please make plans for a second parent or guardian to exit the car and walk them inside.

Please do not block the bike lane.
Attend the first PTO meeting on Wednesday, September 18 at 6 PM in the auditorium. Childcare will be provided!

282 is parent- and community-powered. We believe in shared leadership, feedback, and pitching in. Even the first day of school has been shaped by ideas from kids, parents, teachers and administration about how to make our school as welcoming, successful, and engaging as possible. And, of course, the willingness of parents like you to put in a few hours a week or month, whether contributing as a class parent or on the PTO. We need everything from event planners to envelope-stuffers to artists and grant writers. Keep your calendar open for September 18 at 6pm, our first PTO meeting! If you have ideas/events/programs PLEASE ALERT THE PTO before taking action so we can ensure there are no conflicts. Thank you!

Did you know you can purchase items directly for the classroom? Teachers are always in need of supplies. From basics such as paper towels and Clorox wipes to more project specific items. The PTO is also always looking for a little help to do what we do. Head on over to the wishlist section of the PS 282 website and see if there is something you can purchase and spread the joy. Make your purchase through Amazon Smile and make those dollars do double duty! Items will be delivered to the recipient, no more lugging reams of printer paper with you to drop off 

Box Tops for Education is transitioning over to digital soon and we will send out a separate email with all the details, but in the meantime keep cutting and collecting. Get the kids involved.  Have them look for the box top logo on food products while you shop or cook. Clipped box tops can be dropped off in the PTO office.
