282 Has a New Principal
Please join us in welcoming Amy Rodriguez!
After a long wait, we can finally announce that PS 282 has its next Principal! Her name is Amy Rodriguez, and she’ll be attending our PTO meeting this Monday night, June 10, at 6 pm along with District 13 Superintendent Kamar Samuels.
Before we go any further, we want to acknowledge the incredible work of Katerina Sidbury. Ms. Sidbury has served in many roles at 282 since she started here a decade ago--as a 5th grade teacher, as an Assistant Principal, first in Middle School and then in Pre-K to 2nd grade, and, finally as our dedicated Interim Acting Principal these past six months, guiding us seamlessly through what could have been a very tumultuous period. We are so grateful for Ms. Sidbury’s leadership and devotion to our school.
Principal Rodriguez (“Call me Amy,” she says to parents and teachers; to students, she’ll be Ms. Rodriguez) was in school on Friday along with Superintendent Samuels to meet with School Leadership Team members, and she will be at 282 full time effective immediately. You should have received a welcome letter from her in your child’s homework folder or backpack on Friday--also attached here, so you can read in her own words about her background and her vision for 282. For the next few weeks, she will be meeting with teachers, going into classrooms to introduce herself to students, and getting to know our school community.
At the SLT meeting on Friday, Superintendent Samuels shared why he thought Amy would be a great fit for 282: her energy and enthusiasm, her commitment to and experience with progressive educational approaches, and her ability to mobilize resources and work with many different types of populations. She also shares his vision of a school where academics are excellent, but kids also get to have a lot of fun.
Find out more from Amy herself at the PTO meeting Monday night. It’s a chance for us to get to know her, but it’s also a valuable opportunity for her to listen to us discuss our priorities for the coming year and beyond. (We expect that this meeting will draw a big turnout, so please RSVP for childcare--ages 3 and up--here so that we can make sure to have enough pizza for the kids.)
The parents who attended the Friday meeting with Amy and the Superintendent left inspired and excited for 282’s future. We hope you will join the PTO in sending the warmest 282 welcome to our new Principal Amy Rodriguez.
