Tackle World Cranbourne & Mornington Weekly Fishing Report - 12th January
Good customer, Billy Hayes is this week’s “catch of the week” with this thumping kingfish landed near the Marlo Reef area. That’s a quality King, well done mate!
Matt Cini from Reel Time Fishing Charters began his Kingfish season this week and he jigged up some beauties for his customers. Entice jigs are being smashed according to Matt.
Lee and his mate Tolly launched the boat at St Leonards last week and headed straight to The Rip to jig up some Kingfish. The boys report it was a slow couple of days, but they got the job done in the end and enjoyed some fresh sashimi.
Good customer Daniel Curmi and his father spent a couple of days this week fishing just outside The Rip and can safely say they found the kings! The boys caught 25 Kingfish and countless Salmon. Well done fellas.
Regular customer "Big Tez" went for a burn offshore on Monday and it didn't take long for these beautiful Kingfish to take a liking to his slow trolled strips of fresh Arrow Squid. Well done Tezza, great to see a few of these local hoodlums beginning to fire up!
Ben Gheorghiu found out what Portland had to offer when he boated this 11kg greenback Kingfish while trolling halco lures around the North Shore. Ben actually managed this cracker when he stopped to anchor and it hit while he wound his lure in! Cool stuff Ben!
Scotty Gray has been taking advantage of the fantastic fishery on his doorstep and has nailed a few big ones on the top water this week. Big Kings can’t resist the jet poppers!
Aaron Habgood from Reds Fishing Adventures has been dominating the Kingy scene along the surf coast with plenty of fish landed around the 10kg mark.
Good customer, Billy Hayes boated some whopping Kingfish this week while fishing the Marlo Reef area. Billy had a double hookup on big fish and landed them both which measured 110 and 117cm respectively. All fish were taken on live baits.
Great mates of the shop Tom Hughes and Drew Fenney decided to take advantage of the great weather this week and headed east to look for some Kingfish. The boys speared some lovely fish in the 15-16kg range. Tom was stoked as these were his first Vic Kings on spear.
There is no shortage of Kingfish along the east coast with Montague Island being a major hotspot for big Kings! The boys from Charter Fish Narooma are having plenty of success with fish to 120cm. Live baits have proven to be the best method for the bigger fish.
Ian Jamieson of Broulee got into the Montague Island Kingfish using small jigs while fishing with Stan Gorton last week.
Mitch Bertacchini from Online Fishing Charters got back out on the King George whiting this week and landed plenty of fish for some happy clients including our regular customer Jarrod Day. Mitch reports that the fish mostly came on pipi and squid.
Adam and Natalie Powell had a ball while fishing on the Middle Spit this week. Plenty of whiting were landed and Natalie even managed this beautiful elephant fish which was released after the photo.
Li Yang caught 5 beautiful king George whiting on the Middle Spit this week. Li reports that fresh squid with red beads got the job done. Nice fish Li!
Chris O’Connell from the Police Angling Club took home a nice feed of whiting after fishing the Yaringa area this week. Chris caught whiting to 42cm on squid and mussels.
Staff member Kallan and his good mate Matt Thompson headed out on Friday afternoon in search of a gummy and ended up catching 6! The boys had a pretty successful mission as the rods didn’t stop until they left. Kallan and Matt kept a couple for a feed and the rest swam off strongly. Pilchards and trevally were the bait of choice.
Good customer, Cameron Chasemore took out his young fella Charlie on Saturday morning and Charlie dominated catching this pinky which was his first ever fish. Charlie couldn’t wipe the smile off his face! Great work nugget!
Chris Preston and his good mate, John Macleod set out in search of the elusive mulloway this week while fishing in the shallows with fresh squid. Unfortunately the silver ghosts didn’t play the game, but at least the gummy’s fired up and gave the boys a bit of action for the night.
Jayson Turner from Pro Red Fishing Charters has been getting stuck into the Western Port gummy action and managed to get a couple of his clients stretched on some big ones. Great work Jayson.
Big gummy’s were all the rage this week and it looks like there were a few! Shaun Furtiere from Think Big Fishing Charters was able to put a massive smile on long time client’s face, Johnny Zhu. Great work Shaun!
David Albarenque and good mates, Paul Jabke and Andrew Baker had a great fishing trip last Friday while searching for the big gumbos. After sourcing some fresh yakka and trevally, the trio headed down to the Western Entrance where they didn’t have to wait long for the grey submarines to cruise past. The boys landed 7 sharks which included David’s very first school shark. Great work fellas.
Pat Ellaby heard the big gummys were on the chew in the Western Entrance so he shot down there on Monday morning and successfully landed this 15kg cracker. Well done Pat.
Andrew Domine with a massive 100kg+ (est) seven gill shark caught in the Western Entrance on Saturday.
Plenty of good size gummys around this week with lots of fish in the 4-6kg range with the full moon coming up now is a great time to head out as the larger models will start moving in VERY soon. This lovely fish was caught by Mornington Staff member Harry Bould in the western Entrance.
Bob Hee headed out through the eastern entrance with his sons, Rod and Michael on Saturday in hope for a mako. With much luck, Bob landed this 5’6” beauty which fell victim to a trevally fillet. The boys also took home a great feed of flatties.
PORT PHILLIP BAY
Simon Rinaldi from Red Hot Fishing Charters has continued with the Melbourne snapper this week and found plenty of fish out from Carrum. Pilchard and silver whiting have been the stand out baits for Simmo.
Colin Shelley headed out for a fish on Saturday morning after a 2 year break. Colin was welcomed back to the Fishing bug by a thumping 10.5kg snapper! Colin landed this beast right on noon out from Mornington. Cracker fish Colin!
The crew from Sharkmen Fishing Charters operated from Mt Martha this week and picked up a fantastic mixed bag primarily consisting of whiting and calamari. Love ya work boys!
On Tuesday morning, Amelia headed out with her father from Portarlington in search of a feed of snapper and whiting. After a bit of persistence, the pair decided that the snapper didn’t want to cooperate so they switched over to the whiting and took home a lovely feed. Mussel and squid were the best baits.
AROUND THE STATE
MORWELL (HAZELWOOD PONDAGE)
We keep seeing these barramundi of around 80cm, surely it won’t be long until they hit the magic metre mark! Paul Howard was stoked when he landed this cracker at Hazelwood this week, well done mate!
Massive 291.8kg mako shark landed by Steve Dodd while fishing out from Port Fairy. We can only imagine the grief this big girl gave on 24kg! Well done Steve.
Archie Mapson landed his very first legal sized Murray cod while fishing in the Buffalo River this week. Archie was using his little trout rod with 8lb mono line and the fish itself weighed 9lb!
Young Angler Brodie caught his PB brown trout on Saturday while fishing the Eildon Pondage down near the bridge. Mudeye’s under a float fooled this beauty. Awesome catch Brodie!
Good customer, Ben DaRose took a couple of mates down to Walkerville this week and put them onto some quality gummys along with a beautiful feed of whiting. Great stuff Benny!
Mason Schulze ventured down to Port Welshpool last week and landed this 8kg snapper along with another respectable 7kg fish. According to Mason, the late afternoon run in tide saw the action in 24m of water with fresh squid caught at Port Phillip earlier that day.
Tim Browne was drifting offshore from Mallacoota in some superb conditions this week when he conjured up this fantastic gummy shark which gave him a good work out on his new Stradic Ci4 4000. Looks like the family will be eating fresh flake! Great work Tim.
Andrew Ketelaar headed to the Loch Sport area this week in search of the secret silver and managed to succeed landing this beauty on a tailor fillet. Nice work mate.
The Methers family headed to Lakes Entrance last week and Brodie and Tyler had a ball catching whiting on mussels. There’s a great feed there boys!
Lake Tyers has been fishing very well lately as Cruz found out. 8 years old Cruz landed this stonker Flathead that measured 87cm! The fish was released strong and healthy back into the water. What an awesome first fishing session to have from a kayak! Love your work Cruz!
AROUND THE COUNTRY
Joe and his kids, Dante and Luca headed out on a charter while holidaying in Cairns over the Christmas period. The trio had a ball catching a range of species including some lovely mackerel and a very large bronze whaler. Great work guys!
