STAFF PROFILE – KALLAN BRAID-BALL
img
Kallan Braid-Ball is one of our youngest team members here at Tackle World Cranbourne, but what he lacks in age he makes up for in knowledge. Kallan started working for us when he was a young kid just over 4 years ago and joined the team full time about one year ago. As part of his job here, Kallan actually writes this weekly fishing report for us (except for this bit). He owns his own boat (his Dad owns 3 more), has lived at Warneet for 12 years and has a family holiday house at Portland. We reckon he knows his stuff!

Kallan loves any sort of fishing you can poke a stick at however; he is very passionate about his lure fishing and targeting bream, estuary perch and trout. Kallan is also quite experienced in fishing Western Port, particularly his local area around the top end. He doesn’t mind flickin’ a fly around the Gippsland trout streams also.

Next time you’re in Tackle World Cranbourne, say G ‘day to Kallan, he’s the one with his pants hanging around his knees (as teenagers do)!
TUNA
EAST COAST
img

There were some quality bluefin caught this week on the East Coast. The boys from Charter Fish Narooma ended up finding a solid patch of fish on Wednesday with a few 100kg fish amongst them. Big fish free swimming under the boat…what a sight! A few customers aboard Charter Fish Narooma also hopped into spear some. Wicked stuff!

img

Digger Cowie managed his first ever bluefin while fishing aboard Playstation last week and what a ripper it was! Great fish young fella, we are sure there will be plenty more to come!

img
The Nitro boys had customer Mike Harrington and friends from Canberra jump aboard last week to get their arms stretch with these large school bluefin. The fish are in big schools, but its just a matter of locating them. Great work team.

PORTLAND
img

There are still big numbers of school fish at Portland according to Mitch Bertacchini from Online Fishing Charters, they just don’t seem to be disappearing! Over the weekend Mitch spent a bit of time trying to locate some schools, but once he found the birds working, it was easy pickings. Mitch reports that the fish are a little further east.

APOLLO BAY
img

One of the boys from Tackle World Geelong, Kevin Hunter fished with his good mate Stan Daglas at Apollo Bay last week. The boys managed a good feed landing 3 bluefin to 13.5kg. The fish were scattered around the 40m line and smaller skirted lures produced the goods.

WESTERN PORT
QUAIL BANK
img
Jovica Simic had a ripper session on the calamari last Sunday. Jovica didn’t quite manage his bag, but he didn’t need to because they were all big! A size 3 red yamashita jig did all the damage for Jovica. Great work mate!
BOUCHIER CHANNEL
img
The snapper are still going strong up the top end. There are plenty of good sized fish in and around Bouchier Channel with most fish coming from the run out tide.
SOMERS
img
Some ripper whiting have been taken from the Somers area over the last week, the key is to fish shallow and use really fresh squid as bait. Long shank hooks have also been more effective because the fish have been picky.
WESTERN PORT SOUTH
img
Shaun Furtiere from Think Big Fishing Charters took out client Chris Rhodes last week in search of some great grey subs. Shaun put Chris onto the fish and got his arms stretched by this lovely model. The boys ended up with three fish for the session. Great work guys, flake for tea. YUM YUM.

PORT PHILLIP BAY
SANDRINGHAM
img
Anthony Torpy headed to the Sandy breakwall on Friday in search of some sweet tasting garfish and he was not disappointed. The size and quality have been exceptional according to Anthony and there is no lack in numbers either.
MORNINGTON
img
The Mt Martha and Mornington rocks have been firing when the wind has died down. Good numbers of squid have been taken on size 2.5 jigs. If we get a bit of wind activity then we should see another fluctuation of good snapper taken from the rocks also!
SOUTHERN PORT PHILLIP
img
When Shaun Furtiere isn’t targeting the winter gummies in Western Port, he has been smashing the squid for his clients in the other bay. Shaun found good numbers of calamari yet again this week for his clients aboard Think Big. As the picture dictates, red jigs have been the stand out.
AROUND THE STATE
PORTLAND
img
Not a typical fishing report, but very cool nevertheless. There has been a southern right whale stuck inside the Portland harbor the last few days and is attracting a lot of attention. This is not the first time Portland has seen a whale inside the Harbor. Cool stuff!
HOPKINS RIVER
img

Oliver Andrews landed this cracking bream of about 37cm in the lower reaches of the Hopkins River. Oliver was casting lightly weighted soft plastic lures at structure when he came up tight with this beauty.

BULLEN MERRI
img

Scotty Gray has been hitting some chunky redfin of late in Lake Bullen Merri and Purumbete. Scott is finding large fish stacked up deep on his sounder and sending down soft plastics and vibes which have been getting smashed

LAKE PURRUMBETE
img
Michael Moore from Tackle World Geelong headed to Purrumbete in search of the big browns. Michael managed to find a few fish while trolling Rapala Spotted Dog lures. No monsters were caught but some nice healthy fish were the reward.
TOOLONDO
img
Late last week, Trevor Holmes from Victorian Inland Fishing Charters managed this lovely brown trout the night before the rains hit. Trevor was fishing a 4” Nories spoon tail shad paired with Dizzy Scent. Great work Trev.
EILDON
img
Regular Mornington customer, Luke Chapple and his mate Troy Gorton set out in search of some trout on the troll at Eildon. The boys managed a handful of beautiful table sized browns trolling Rapala CD-7’s. Conditions were cold, but ideal for trout. Love your work fellas!
BALCOMBE CREEK
img
Staff member Gerry was itching for a fish on Tuesday so he headed down to Balcombe Creek to escape from the weather. Gerry managed this lovely bream while fishing a lightly weighted scrub worm. Gerry took a quick photo and measured it before releasing it back to the water. Great stuff Gerry.
DEVILBEND RESERVIOR
img
Staff member Garry is our trout fishing and wilderness Guru here at Tackle World. Gaz headed down to Devilbend with staff member Gerry on Monday to try their luck in some cold and windy conditions. Toughing it out definitely paid off when Gaz landed this cracking rainbow trout of about 3lb. A Strada Piccola lure did the damage while casting into the weed patches around the edge of the lake. Garry went home and smoked up his wonderful catch. Great work fellas!
KILCUNDA
img
Dana Cihelka took her two boys, Adam and Benedict down to Kilcunda over the weekend where they each found some chunky salmon from the sand. The trio managed to land three bigger models to 60cm and 3 smaller fish about 35cm. Dana reports it was the first time she had fished there and it was quite exciting. Bluebait was the gun bait for the day.
PAYNESVILLE
img

A local Paynesville angler had a ripper session last week fishing from the piers that the ferry runs from to Raymond Island. Using cranka crabs, he managed countless amounts of bream to about 35cm.

MALLACOOTA
img
Stuart Hindson is the man down east! Tom and John fished with Stuart last week for a couple of days where they managed 60 odd big black bream! Stuart reports that although they pulled a good haul, they still had to work hard as the conditions were glassy. Keep up the good work Stu!
AROUND THE COUNTRY
EUCUMBENE
img
Stuart from Somerville visited Buckenderra last week for his annual Eucumbene trip with a mate. Trolling was the method used which brought about this trophy fish weighing a solid 9.47lb! Stuart said that this fish was definitely the highlight of the trip, but good numbers of smaller browns and rainbows kept the pair busy. Great fishing lads!
