WELCOME BACK TO MORNINGTON PIER
img

A very exciting time for Victorian land based fishos! Mornington pier is opening to public this Saturday the 8th of August and to celebrate they will be holding a bunch of activities, tours and a sausage sizzle. It all kicks off at 10am so get down there and cement your fishing spot on the pier!

The re-built pier includes:

  • Improved access to the water with a new 60 metre low landing area.
  • A new larger concrete pier section, inlayed with a timber deck walking surface.
  • Wave protection panels designed to withstand strong local waves and provide some protection to vessels berthed in the fisherman’s wharf.

Parks Victoria would like to thank the community for their patience as works progressed.

Head to Mornington pier this Saturday 8 August from 10am and enjoy free activities, tours and a sausage sizzle.

STAFF PROFILE – GARRY NORTON
img

Garry Norton has been a part of our Tackle World team here for just under a year but in his short time he has made a massive imprint on the rest of our team and also our customers. Garry made the transfer from being a painter this time last year when he realized that fishing was where his passion lays. Prior to working here at Cranbourne, Garry was a very regular customer who was very keen on his fishing, so we knew when he started that he would fit right in!

Gaz is an advocate for fresh water fishing, chasing trout is one of his all time passions and he has had many years of experience doing it. Gaz owns a Hobie kayak which definitely sees a lot of water and a lot more fish during the warmer months, the stealth approach to fishing is something Garry takes into account and he loves ambushing those predatory fish! Along with his kayak, Gaz owns a great little tinny which is set up perfectly for lake trolling which of late has produced some lovely Murray cod from Eildon. You may have seen Gaz all over our fishing report the last few months, especially in regards to Devilbend Reservoir where a lot of people struggle to pull fish out of but Gaz has figured it out and always seems to bring home a beauty.

Garry looks after the stockings of our rods here at Cranbourne and he ensures that our racks are always full! Garry is highly regarded for his fantastic customer service, he doesn’t just serve our customers, he befriends them and makes sure they are going fishing with the right knowledge and gear.

Next time you pop into the shop, stop and have a chat with Gaz, whether it is freshwater or salt, he will put you onto the fish!

WESTERN PORT
WARNEET
img
Not a place we have heard stacks about lately, but over the last week anglers have been getting stuck into the squid from the Warneet pier. Anglers have had most success with larger jigs in darker colours. If you don’t know where to fish just look for the ink stains on the pier!!
QUAIL BANK
img
The calamari in the top end are still going strong, however conditions were a little tough this week with the fresh water pushing down and most anglers had success on the incoming tide because of the more clear water pushing up the top. A few anglers have had good success drop shotting in deeper water.
STONEY POINT
img

Regular customer Trent Dickinson managed this tasty calamari when he shot out for a quick session after work on Friday. Trent was fishing near the sub at Stoney and after 10 minutes of fishing his float went under and he pulled in the lovely calamari on an old silver whiting.

PORT PHILLIP BAY
FRANKSTON
img

Good amounts of garfish have been prevalent in the Frankston and Seaford area and the surprising part is that for the area the size has been quite big compared to previous seasons. Garfish are a very tasty fish but we think the good numbers will bring the snapper in close and we can only hope that they will start to fire!

BALCOMBE CREEK
img

A couple of the boys from the Mornington shop headed down to Balcombe Creek over the weekend for a quick fish and managed to land a few nice bream while drifting un weighted scrub worms near structure.

BLAIRGOWRIE
img

Great numbers of calamari were taken this week from Blairgowrie and surrounding areas. The size is not huge but will cook up deliciously or make a fantastic snapper bait! Green and gold jigs have been the top performers.

AROUND THE STATE
PORTLAND
img
There is still plenty of tuna to be had at Portland when the weather has been kind enough for anglers to get out, however the fish are still in that 50m line so boats aren’t having to travel too far! We should see plenty more reports in the next week as the weather for the weekend is looking pretty good.
WESTERN DISTRICT
img
Scotty Gray has had some good success over the last week. The weather has been fairly ordinary so he has been sticking to the lakes further inland being Bullen Merri and Purrumbete. Scotty has found good patches of redfin down deep on his sounder and getting his lures to them has mainly required a downrigger. Scotty has also been nailing some chunky trout. Great stuff mate!
LAKE PURRUMBETE
img
Ray Stewart had a cracker day on the water this week at Lake Purrumbete managing this monster brown and a lovely Chinook salmon. Trolling has been proving most effective for anglers at Purrumbete but fishing a mudeye under a float is also a handy option.
TOOLONDO
img
Trevor Holmes from Victorian Inland Fishing Charters has managed to put his customers onto the fish this week. Although Trevor reports the fishing has been tough, most days he has managed a fish which makes it all the more rewarding. Beautiful looking hen brown, great stuff Trev!
img

Geoff Stock has been dominating the big browns at Toolondo this week and he is showing how much of a precious fishery it is! Geoff has been having a lot of success this week flat lining tassie devils and trolling mudeyes. These fish are in pristine condition, love your work Geoff!

EILDON
img
Staff member Kallan headed up to Eildon over the weekend with good friend of the shop Paul Delisle. The boys fished in dismal conditions, the rain didn’t stop once for the entire day but they toughed it out and made the most of it which made it all the more rewarding. The boys took a stealthy approach and opted for the electric motor trolling in and around heavy timber when Kallan’s rod was almost reefed out of his hand by this lovely little cod measuring just under 60cm. Kallan reports that a green coloured Old Mate lure did the damage.

KILCUNDA
img
There were some cracker sambos caught across the state this week but Kilcunda was definitely the most consistent beach again. The fish seem to be holding in the gutters in close on high tide and it can be very easy pickings for the lure fishermen regarding they have the right lure on!
MITCHELL RIVER
img
Ian Gray spent the weekend down on the Mitchell River where the fishing was tough, however he did mange this chunky carp while fishing at the cut. Carp are definitely not a desired species, but they go hard on light gear and for every carp caught, it means there is one less in our waters! Good stuff Ian.

LAKES ENTRANCE
img
The guys from Far Out Fishing Charters in Lakes Entrance have been getting customers aboard and out to the offshore reefs despite the miserable weather. The colder months can be very productive and of late the pinkes have been flourishing.
LAKE TYERS
img
Not exactly a fishing report but a good sign for anglers heading down to Lake Tyers! Tyers is about to burst if it hasn’t already and that can only mean that the fish are going to fire right up! Exiting times for anyone heading down to Gippsland!

AROUND THE COUNTRY
NAROOMA
img
The boys from Charter Fish Narooma have reported that the bluefin front has definitely shut down over the last couple of weeks, however there is still some awesome fishing to be had along the east coast. This monster gummy was one of two taken the other day and they were both of about 15-20kg! Cracking fish!
MAROOCHY RIVER
img

Cracker flathead! Glenn Loffler landed this beautiful flatty along with several others while fishing from the banks of the Maroochy River. Glenn has been catching fresh mullet and then filleting them up for bait.

Great work Glenn!

YORKEYS KNOB
img

Michael Black has been lucky enough to be enjoying the warm weather of far north Queensland and in his time up there he has smashed the large mouth nannygai! Michael had a ripper session while fishing 20 miles out from Yorkeys Knob where himself and four others managed to bag out in 30 minutes. Insane stuff, well done!

OVERSEAS
THAILAND
img
Theo Klease, “The Western Port Guru” has been getting things done whilst on holidays in Thailand. Theo managed to catch this 5kg red tail catfish along with the well known snakehead. Beautiful looking fish Theo!
