Congratulations to Tackle World Cranbourne staff member Jesse Matthias on “Catch of the Week” with his crackin’ 80+ cm Barra out of Hazelwood Pondage. Fishing land based and with the storm clouds rolling in, Jesse landed what is one of the biggest fish to come from the Pondage so far!

Last week, PW joined up with Anthony Forster from Inland Fisheries Victoria and set out on a mission kayaking down the Ovens River in search of some iconic Murray cod. The mission was successful with some cracker Cod caught and by all reports the Ovens River is in fantastic condition and it was very pleasing to see PW catch some lovely trout cod as by catch! Do note that trout cod are completely protected and must be released if caught!

Then on Tuesday, Paul managed to sneak out in search of local tuna and found some crackers out the Western Entrance of Western Port while fishing with young gun Kade Burns. Paul reports that most of his success came on X-rap 30’s and small 4” skirts. Kade was definitely thrilled to be fishing with his idol! How amazing is it launching from Stoney Point to go tuna fishing!

The Kings are still gracing us with their presence here in Melbourne. Matt Cini from Reel Time Fishing Charters came across a nice patch of fish on Monday using live baits & squid. It’s great to see your still getting amongst them Matt!

The boys from Sharkmen Fishing Charters were back amongst the Melbourne Kingfish action this week with some beauties taken out of The Rip! A range of methods have been working well around slack water.

It is not unheard of that the Kings often show up inside the Port and John McInerney stumbled across this beauty while fishing for snapper near Lysaughts. John’s Kingfish measured 87cm and was landed on Saturday morning along with some beautiful snapper.

PHILLIP ISLAND

Good customer, Jason Taylor was rewarded with some quality Kings when he went searching locally around the Island. Jason reports the chunky hoodlums were great fun on his Murasame rods!

FLINDERS

Staff member Mark Keaveny fished with a couple of his good mates, Peter and Justin on Saturday in search of the Local tuna and they definitely found them! The boys ended up with 6 Bluefin in total with all fish weighing in between 24 and 25kg. Well played to all on board, it's unreal to see fishing like this in our own backyard!

Matt headed out solo from Portland on Tuesday and it didn’t take him long to catch a feed of tuna! Matt landed these healthy bluefin in no time at all!

The barrels have turned up! Frank Vella landed this whopping 98.6kg bluefin tuna while fishing out form Port Fairy on Saturday. We better put away the light gear now the big boys have showed up! Well done Frank!

Andrew sent through this photo of his mate Marcus who hadn’t been fishing before and on his very first cast, Marcus landed this quality cuttlefish on the Tyabb Bank. Andrew reports it was delicious!

Young Holly Fereday and Ella Coutts caught these nice little snapper on sauries and pilchards while out from Corinella over the long weekend. The girls managed 10 fish between 35 and 50cm in a hot hour session on the run in tide. Holly and Ella were very happy with their catch!

Adam and Joelle landed some chunky whiting while out form Corinella on Saturday. The pair landed some cracking fish with 2 measuring 48cm! Squid and pipis got the fish biting.

The elephants are starting to show up! Steve Hunter landed this quality 3kg model while fishing in 21m of water near Cowes. Steve reports that his elephant swallowed his pilchard and took off like a snapper! Love your work Steve.

There has been plenty of good sized gummys coming in over the past week. Ashley Shaw caught this big girl while fishing out from Somers on the last of the incoming tide. The fish weighed in at 12.5kg. Great to see you got a good cuddle Ash!

Darren Hamilton Moore and John Italiano fished Western Port on Thursday night in almost perfect conditions. The boys managed this nice Bronze Whaler and had countless bite offs. They were fishing down near buoy 1 with plenty of action!

Definitely an interesting capture by Pat Ellaby this week! Pat landed this frigate makerel amongst the busting salmon near Seal Rocks. Frigate mackerel is a subspecies of tuna typically found in tropical waters, so this one was definitely lost!

Dan Brittain and his young fella Bailey had a ball catching squid while drifting in their Kayak out from Frankston this week. Bailey was very proud of his catch!

The reds are making their way back! Tom Sidiropoulos landed this 5.2kg snapper while fishing in 19m of water out from Mt Martha in some pristine conditions on Saturday morning. Tom reports that pilchards were the bait of choice.

Neil Beckett has been getting stuck into the calamari of late and even managed to land some of these cracking cuttlefish! Neil has been finding the majority of his cephalopods around the Sorrento area. Great work mate!

Mick the “Bulldog” landed this respectable gummy shark while fishing for whiting at St Leonards this week. Mick reports it definitely gave his 3kg whiting rod a work out, but in the end he got the job done, well done mate!

HAZELWOOD PONDAGE

Over the past 2 weeks we have seen an increase in the number of Barra being caught in Hazelwood Pondage so Tackle World Cranbourne staff member Jesse Matthias decided to try his luck and wasn't disappointed, with one of the biggest Barra to come out of the Pondage so far. Fishing land based, Jesse landed this 80+ cm fish which went back in after a few snaps. It seems the Barra shut down a bit over summer maybe because of the heat and water skiing activity, but they certainly are firing now. Jesse is back at work this Friday and at Tackle World Cranbourne all weekend if you want to come and chat about tips and techniques for these Aussie Icons now available within an hours drive from Melbourne.

With the Barra firing up at Hazelwood, now is the time to take full advantage of it! Mitch Chapman and Will Thompson hit the water Tuesday afternoon and got 4 really solid fish casting paddle tail soft plastics at the rock walls. Well played fellas!

Kozzi and Huff ventured to Port Welshpool over the weekend and with much success, the boys landed a fantastic feed of flathead and a nice gummy shark while fishing in 30m of water near White Rock.

LAKES ENTRANCE

Staff member Zach and mate Nick Taranto headed to Lakes Entrance over the weekend to have a drop for Swordfish. Though the swords didn't want to play the game the boys didn't come back empty handed. They landed a stonking big Blue Eye Trevalla and some other crazies of the deep! We do wish Zach would keep his shirt on however! Well done boys!

MALLACOOTA

Regular customer, David Borninkhof headed up to Coota for the long weekend for the annual Hampton Park FC Cobweb Trip. The fishing was tough this year considering the hours spent on the water but there were some good fish landed with 15 bream caught on hardbodies to 43cm and some good flathead to 75cm. Borno reports that squidgy 80 and 100mm bloodworm wrigglers were the stand out plastics for both the bream and flathead. Great work mate!

Regular customer of Tackleworld Cranbourne Colin Fonz got into the bluefin and crayfish at Cape Jervis in SA last week along with snapper and gummies. What an epic feed there, well done Colin!

John Jukes landed his first ever Murray cod while fishing in the Edwards River near Deniliquin over the long weekend. John reports that a live yabby on his little Tackle Rat rod got the job done on this 64cm beauty. Well done John!

Anne caught a fish of a lifetime when she landed this monster flathead measuring 1.05m and weighing 9.7kg from the top lake at Merimbula. Congratulations Anne!

Good customer, Chris has been fishing Bermagui for the past week with his dad and a mate. The boys managed to tag 3 Marlin, they dropped three but they made up for it with this toothy mako shark. Good work fellas!

Ray Micallef fished up at Bermagui over the weekend and reports that plenty of marlin were present. Ray had 6 hits on Friday before hooking up to this 100kg striped. Lumo skirts did the job for Ray!
