Tackle World Cranbourne & Mornington Weekly Fishing Report - 1st September
Congratulations to Glen Palmer and Stuart Millsom who are this week’s "catch of the week" with their 127kg bluefin tuna landed in 40m of water out from Flinders. Great to see such big fish close to home. Well done boys!
It seems as though all the rumours are true and the big bluefin tuna have turned up out the front of Phillip Island. Glen Palmer and Stuart Millsom headed out from Western Port on Sunday and returned with a 127kg beast on board. The pair were trolling in 40m of water off Flinders when their Pakula lumo was crunched! Amazing effort fellas!
Regular customer, Tam Missen was another lucky angler to have landed a cracking tuna from out of Western Port this week. After hearing the reports from the weekend, Tam headed out solo on Monday, found the bait and before long was hooked into this 78kg beauty! Amazing effort to hook, fight and gaff a fish of this caliber on your own. Great work Tam!
Good to see the tuna are still going strong at Portland, it has definitely been a lengthy season! Michael Purcell landed this beast in 70m of water at Bridgewater with his brother James and Old man Craig. Michael’s fish weighed in at 90kg however, we think the scales could be broken as it looks a lot bigger! Fantastic fish nevertheless.
Good to see the boys from Sharkmen Fishing Charters boat a barrel for their last trip of the season, definitely a good way to end it! The boys had a double hook up unfortunately losing the second fish, however this 105kg beauty was more than enough to go round!
Andrew Ketelaar fished in some glassy conditions on Sunday afternoon and was rewarded with some lovely squid including this beauty all from Gentle Annie. Good stuff Andrew!
John Devers landed some descent squid on the Quail Bank while fishing with his dad on Sunday afternoon. John reports that silver whiting under a float was the method of choice as the pair managed a respectable bag of 8.
Shaun Furtiere from Think Big Fishing Charters has been stocking up on some quality snapper baits and is keeping his clients happy in-between with some tasty calamari.
Gail Dalton fished in some superb conditions on Monday and also managed to land this lovely red weighing 6.4kg taken on a pilchard. Great work Gail!
We are definitely seeing plenty more snapper in the reports as we move our way into Spring. Andrew Shortis managed this beautiful 7.6 red while fishing the Coronet Bay side of Corinella. Squid was the bait of choice. Well done Andrew.
PORT PHILLIP BAY
Alan Bonici fished the dirty waters of the Maribyrnong River again this week and landed some quality bream on un-weighted scrub worms. Nice fish Alan!
Matt Cini from Reel Time Fishing Charters has been nailing some tasty calamari in the Mt Martha area this week. So tasty he couldn’t resist a quick snack! Hayabussa squid jigs doing the damage yet again!
Plenty of quality calamari are coming from the Mornington and Mt Martha rocks of late with red a gold jigs being a stand out.
The Blairgowrie pier has been a hotspot for the calamari this week as Jason Culmer found out on Sunday evening. A white Shimano jig got the job done for Jason.
AROUND THE STATE
Now that’s a brown trout! This fat looking trout was landed at Lake Purrumbete by Dan Mackrell this week.
Anthony Forster from Fisheries sent in this photo of a 4.2kg salmon landed by a lucky angler at Purrumbete. What a horse!
WURDI BULOC RES
Michael Evans was back in the action this week when he landed some quality redfin at Wurdi Buloc Reserve. This specimen measured 48cm and was landed on a metal spoon fished over the weed beds.
Another big cod landed from Eildon this week and what a cracker it was! Doug Brereton found some inspiration after watching Taking Fishing and headed straight to the Big River Arm and landed this 92cm whopper on a purple deep diver.
As we transition into the warmer weather, we should start to see a lot more yellow belly coming from the Eildon area. Boots and Kate fished the Bonnie Doon side over the weekend and were rewarded with 6 quality fish with the biggest weighing 6lb. Well done guys!
David Russell was out fished by his wife, Jenny when the pair headed up to the Pondage over the weekend. Jenny landed these beautiful trout with the biggest weighing 1.6kg.
BLUE ROCK LAKE
Seven year old, Rusty Axford landed this beautiful 45cm brown trout while trolling lures at Blue Rock with his dad on Sunday. Rusty’s old man, Andrew said it was definitely worth getting up early for!
Jack & Rhianna Wheatley landed their very first estuary perch while fishing the Tarwin River on Sunday afternoon. Bass yabbies were the bait of choice, well done kids!
Frank Milito from East Gippsland Fishing Charters reports that with the weather warming up, the big frogs are coming out to play! Frank reports that there has been a few big girls landed in the mid 90s.
Staff member Don Newman called in sick last weekend and headed down to the Tambo River with the rest of the Western Port Angling Club. Plenty of big fish were landed with the biggest weighing 1.34kg by Phil Stroker. Don also managed to get amongst the action and landed these 2 beauties. Hope to see a doctor’s certificate mate!
Christian Kaoullas fished with his dad and the Hookers Fishing Club in the recent bream competition at Lake Tyers over the weekend. Over 40 competitors fished both by boat and land-based and all reported the conditions were quite tough but Christian was lucky enough to land the winning fish of 40cm. Well done mate.
