Tackle World Cranbourne & Mornington Weekly Fishing Report - 6th April
It’s not always the biggest fish that wins! Check out the smile on this young fella’s face! Congratulations Jaydee O’Dell, you are this week’s “catch of the week” with your beautiful Casey Fields rainbow trout!
Paul is currently fishing out of Eaglehawk Neck in Tassie chasing his favorite species, the broadbill swordfish. Day one yesterday; Paul was on the rod for 5 hours and was able to sat tag this monster estimated at 350kg. Joined by renowned fisheries scientist Sean Tracey, the boys released the fish safely and got some incredible footage of this beast swimming back to the depths of the ocean.
HAZELWOOD PONDAGE BASS
Greg Cheetham fished The Pondage last week and was stoked when he fought a steam train of a Bass that ended up measuring 50cm. Nice catch Greg!
While Hazelwood Pondage adjusts to the reduced flow of hot water, the trophy bass that have been forgotten over the past 14 years have come out to play. Paul Watkins landed this 51cm stonker on Sunday. Well done mate!
Ben Phayer and Jason Deenan fished Hazelwood on Friday and while fishing for a prized Barra, the boys landed this very respectable bass of 50cm which was caught on a vibe lure.
Shaun Furtiere from Think Big Fishing Charters produced the goods with some more quality gummy’s throughout the week. There was some average weather last week, which made things tough, but Shaun was able to send his clients home with a respectable feed.
Chris Rosenbrock headed out on the Port this week and landed a good bag of 40+ cm King George whiting. Chris reports cuttlefish bait worked a treat.
Rob McKenzie headed out from Hastings this week and got himself some thumping whiting. Rob only managed the 7 fish, but you don’t mind when they are around the 46cm mark like this beauty! Pipis were the key on the run out tide!
Staff member Kallan and his good mate Thommo had a successful day out on the water on Sunday. The boys put in at Warneet and collected some fresh squid before heading off and seeking out a gummy. Thommo was rapt with this beautiful gumbo to make up for the wet clothes! Well done fellas!
Rose Powell landed this chunky 44cm whiting amongst a good bag of fish down off Flinders on the weekend.
Justin Blythe took his girls, Hope and Olivia down to Balnarring for a bit of a fish this week and the trio were happy to land a few lovely elephant fish on the low tide. Great work guys!
PORT PHILLIP BAY
Anthony Torpy headed down to the Sandringham Breakwater on Monday afternoon and can safely report that there are some good gars in the area. Anthony landed 9 big garfish along with a heap of mullet, bream and small salmon.
7-year-old Taj Caterson out fished his dad again with some nice flatties caught on the drift out the front of Chelsea in 11-12m using soft plastics. Well done Taj; there’s a great feed there!
The snapper have really fired up out from Mornington! Jayson Turner from Pro Red Fishing Charters was amongst them this week and reports Mornington is definitely the place to be with fish spread across various depths. Pilchard and squid has been the bait of choice.
Luke and Liam Leslie started the school holidays off with a bang by heading to Mornington and landing some beautiful Australian salmon from the pier on Sunday morning.
Staff member Jesse Matthias and his good mate Matt Greenway headed to Balcombe Creek where the landed some good size bream to 35cm on un-weighted scrub worms.
There has been no lack of cephalopods along the Peninsula of late. Xavier Colbert headed out from Rosebud this week and was very pleased with his catch of squid and cuttlefish. Hopefully we continue to see these beautiful cuttles in the reports!
It has been a strong season on the gummy sharks in both Western Port and Port Phillip! Mana Sherman boated this beautiful specimen while fishing the South Channel Fort in Port Phillip recently. Mana was fishing in about 12m of water with a fresh salmon strip when his rod began to buckle. Love ya work mate!
Josh Allwood made the most of his school holidays so far and landed this beautiful 42cm King George whiting while fishing out from St Leonards. It has been a strong season on the whiting in the Bay and hopefully it continues!
AROUND THE STATE
The new vessel has been serving Simon Rinaldi and Matty Harris from Red Hot Fishing Charters very well! The big Noosa Cat was recently added to the fleet and they report that it handles the Portland seas very well and it seems to be a tuna catching machine! Keep the fish coming boys!
Congratulations to Mark Scholte on his monster tuna. This fish was caught at Apollo Bay on a Bonze Undertaker and is hopefully a sign of things to come.
Scott Poulter was rapt to land this lovely 75cm Murray cod while fishing on the Goulburn River near Mitchelton. It is great to see the Goulburn alive with this beautiful species!
Candice took her 3.5yr old son, Jaydee O’Dell down to Casey Fields this week and the young fella was absolutely pumped to land his very first fish on his new Big Boys combo bought at our Cranbourne store the day before. We love nothing more than seeing the young ones with a great big smile and a beautiful fish!
Luke and Liam Leslie did well at the Morninton pier on Sunday, but the boys decided to go and take advantage of the recent stocking at Casey Fields and landed some beautiful rainbow trout to compliment the salmon from the day before.
Staff members Jesse and Zach headed up to Noojee on Tuesday where they picked up some quality trout from the Toorongo River. The pair managed quite a few small fish, but Jesse did pull this respectable brown while flicking small soft plastics. Great work fellas!
Congratulations to Steve Taranto and the crew aboard “Home Strait” on catching this monster of a sword off Lakes entrance on Sunday. Ash Costa was the lucky one on the rod with TW Mornington staff member Zach McMahon the gaff man.
Andrew Shortis and Gavin McCloud netted some good size prawns on a recent trip to Lakes Entrance. The boys have been heading to Lakes for the past 3 years and they report that this year was their most prosperous. Well done fellas!
AROUND THE STATE
Peter Szitas landed this whopping 120cm Murray cod while fishing from the bank at Lake Mulwala recently. Peter was only using 7kg line so it was a massive effort to land this big girl. Peter released the monster after a quick photo.
Terry Clark caught this beautiful dolphin fish while fishing near the FAD out from Eden last week. Terry reports there are good numbers of dollies around the FAD with his crew landing 13 fish measuring 75 to 95cm.
