Tackle World Cranbourne & Mornington Weekly Fishing Report - 12th April
Congratulations to Kevin Buhagiar on “Catch of the Week”. Kevin landed this beautiful Victorian sword while on a solo mission out of Lakes Entrance last week. Great effort Kevin!
Cristy, Paul & Jet have just returned from a trip down to Eaglehawk Neck in Tassie chasing swords. After the beast they landed mid last week, they spent a restful day on the tuna last Friday and landed some cracking fish to 30kg in some of the most spectacular scenery in Australia. Keep an eye out for new episodes of IFISH starting soon.
Breno and Carri headed out off Corinella last week and fished around Reef Island. Breno reports good numbers of big calamari around the island at the moment as well as some nice whiting.
Lily Bradford-Sage headed out with step dad Justin and found a nice patch of large salmon just off Stoney Point. Reports are there are some large schools around at the moment, just look for the birds.
Dion Dollas caught a nice Coota out on Western Port last week and was pretty stoked with his catch. They’re something different and can put up a good fight on light gear for kids.
How’s this for a couple of horse whiting! Milla and Griffin Spierings headed to The Spit with dad Luke and they caught a dozen big whiting between them in a hot bite on the middle spit. All fish were over 38cm and the largest was 45cm. All were caught on fresh squid which they got while bait collecting earlier in the day.
And another big whiting! Vince Natarelli went for a fish out of Warneet last week and while fishing in 22 meters of water he always puts out a whiting rod while fishing for gummy’s. After hardly a bite all day the whiting rod screamed off and up came a 47.5cm, nearly 800-gram whiting. Definitely a PB and some great fillets.
Andrew Ketelaar went out for a fish on Friday night on the incoming tide and caught this lovely gummy shark on trevally fillets, fishing the Gentle Annie channel. Awesome fish Andrew!
Western Port Angling Club member Bruce North headed down off Shoreham last Thursday and wasn’t disappointed with a nice feed. He landed a Snapper of 6.5 kg and a Gummy that went 7.0 kg.
Cal Barnett fished off the beach at Balnarring last week and landed his first ever land based Gummy. Cal fished the slack tide and using a 5oz sinker and 7/0 circle loaded with a squid ring, he caught and released this little beauty. Well done Cal.
Steve Corrigan and Justin Blythe went land based gummy fishing last Saturday night at Somers/Balnarring. The boys fished through the storm with no luck on the gummies but they weren't disappointed tho, landing a couple of lovely snapper. The snapper fell victim to a running sinker rig with an 8/0 octopus circle hook and a chunk of yack! Fantastic catch fellas!
PORT PHILLIP BAY
Jayson Turner from Pro Red Fishing Charters has been getting his customers a nice feed of snapper this week. Jayson reports the fish are biting like they do in November and pillies are working a treat. Don’t wait for the big queues at the traditional time of year; give Jayson a buzz and get out on the snapper now!
Along with the incredible numbers of squid around Mornington at the moment we are also seeing a few cuttlefish about. TW Mornington regular Julian Rennie caught this giant Cuttle weighing 3.5kg
Debra Green headed for a fish last Thursday out from Mt Martha. Debra was anchored in 21meters of water when her rod buckled and the fight was on. Debra landed this awesome 8kg snapper and to top it off it was her birthday. Happy Birthday Debra and fantastic catch!
So close ! Will Lawn headed out in search of whiting last week and nearly cracked the 50cm 1kg mark. This horse went 49.8cm and weighed 965g cleaned. It’ll do in our books Will. Great catch!
AROUND THE STATE
Brothers Brodie and Hudson Brain headed to Yarrambat Lake with their grandad during the school holidays, and they were pretty stoked to land a rainbow trout each. Great to see the kids out and about enjoying fishing on the hols.
Neil Webb took his grandchildren Will 4 and Ella 2 to Yarrambat lake last Saturday. Will caught one Redfin only for it to be grabbed by a much larger 48cm one. Not bad, two at once on the same lure. Not to be outdone Ella joined in with one of the stocked rainbows. Grandpa now has the best two fishing buddies!
Kai Michalski headed to Paynesville for the school holidays and while fishing land based, he landed this 53cm flatty on a squidgy wriggler. Nice fish Kai.
BLUE ROCK LAKE
Peter Newgreen headed to Blue Rock last Friday and managed to catch his PB bass. Fishing in the trees using a drifted yabby in 9m of water, Pete’s rod buckled and after a short strong fight he had a 45 cm bass in the net, his biggest yet. Well done Pete!
