On the Road Again

Dear reader,
Alaska is more than 40 times the size of the Netherlands. Yet, on my first work visit to Alaska, I learned that we have more in common than meets the eye. Agriculture, climate, and trade are some of the topics we discussed. In all of those meetings, another commonality was mentioned: sports. Alaskans love sports, and they know a lot about Dutch Formula 1, soccer, and even the Elfstedentocht.
The visit to Alaska was the first of hopefully many real-life meetings this fall. With a Pop-Up Consulate in Seattle, a trade mission on mobility and life sciences and health to Arizona and California, and CES 2022 in Las Vegas, we have a busy schedule for the months ahead.
I’ve been in San Francisco for a year now, and I’ll admit that I’m happy I can finally go out and meet you all, while keeping an eye on the latest Delta-variant developments. In the end, business is done best when you can look each other in the eye, hand shake optional.
Please schedule a meeting if you need our support.
Best, Dirk Janssen
Consul General

The Last Frontier
Consul General Dirk Janssen joined Ambassador André Haspels on a work visit to Alaska to connect with business and government officials to strengthen the ties in the fields of trade, agriculture, and climate. They also explored the concrete opportunities in Alaska in the field of greenhouses and smart agriculture.
Local news outlet Must Read Alaska wrote: "The Netherlands has an excellent track record in agriculture, energy and water management,” said Ambassador Haspels. “I’m looking forward to getting to know the Last Frontier state and to connect with its people and businesses.”
During the diplomatic visit, they visited Bell's Nursery, the largest greenhouse operator in the state met with governor Mike Dunleavy and Municipality of Anchorage Tayor Dave Bronson; and toured Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center, which will host a Dutch exhibition next year. They also visited Vanderweele Farms, the largest potato farm in Alaska, founded by Ben and Suus Vanderweele, who emmigrated from the Netherlands.

The ambassador joined a candid conversation with young professionals, hosted by Alaska World Affairs Council and World Trade Center Anchorage (Alaska), to talk about climate change, diversity, and the world of diplomacy.

Trade Mission Mobility and LSH
Is your business ready for the US West Coast? Join this trade mission on Smart, Green, Urban Mobility and Life Sciences & Health.
The mission takes place November 14-19 and will visit Phoenix, Los Angeles, Sacramento, and San Francisco. Mobility participants will also join the CoMotion Conference in LA. The Minister for Foreign Trade and the State Secretary for Infrastructure plan to join too.
The US West Coast appreciates diversity, thinking out-of-the-box, and non-traditional ways of doing business. We invite everybody, including young and female entrepreneurs, start-ups and scale-ups to join.
In light of the Corona situation, a final decision on this mission will be made in late September.
