UAC Welcomes New Program Partner, VietLEAD

We are proud to officially announce and welcome our newest program partner, VietLEAD to the Coalition!   VietLEAD  assists Vietnamese refugees and immigrants in their search for a life in liberty and dignity by empowering, equipping and organizing Vietnamese American communities in their progress toward self-sufficiency.  VietLEAD specializes and provides a
dvocacy, leadership Development, civic engagement, youth development and organizing, health promotion, and community building projects.  
Urban Affairs Coalition Lives United
UAC's Best Campaign in Five Years! 


The team at Urban Affairs Coalition, a United Way Impact Partner, has delivered the organization’s best campaign in five years! The employees raised more than $15,200, increasing their total by more than 13 percent over last year. The campaign also saw a 50 percent increase in participation.

The success of the campaign was buoyed by incentives and clearly the shared commitment of the employees to Live United. Employees shared the sentiment that when people contribute to the United Way campaign it gives them a sense of pride and value to support a great cause that helps many community and nonprofit organizations, including partners and programs under the Urban Affairs Coalition umbrella.

The United Way thanked Urban Affairs Coalition President and CEO Sharmain Matlock-Turner, Employee Campaign Chairs Amy Han and Stephanie Callender, and the entire Urban Affairs Coalition team for creating Impact and Living United!

Minority Business Fund Grant Opportunity

Bank of America Minority Business Fund Scholarship is accepting applications for their grant-based program which provides targeted training and development support to qualified, certified Small and Diverse Businesses.  Recipients of the scholarship will be given the opportunity to further enhance the business operations functions within their companies to become competitive within their field of business. 
The application is open until December 18, 2015.

Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation
Grant Opportunity

Nonprofits serving inner city youth throughout the United States are eligible to apply year round for grants from the Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation.  Founder, and lifelong member and advocate of the Boys and Girls Club, Mark Wahlberg established his organization in 2001 to ensure that no child is limited or prevented from attaining their lifetime goal or dream due to financial circumstances.

Partner Announcements

Queer Latin@ Youth hosts World AIDS Day Event

In celebration of World AIDS Day, GALAEI will host a FREE HIV testing event for El Centro de Estudiantes High School students this Friday, December 4th at 149 West Susquehanna Avenue, from noon to 3:30.  The event was organized by graduating senior, Christine Carrion as part of a senior project to mobilize her student peers to know their HIV status.

Volunteers Needs for Holiday Children's Event

Volunteers are needed at this year’s Miracle on 36th Street!  This holiday season, Ian-Yae's In Touch will be hosting their annual community Christmas event. There will be a toy giveaway for the first 100 kids, with food, music, and  photo opportunities  with Santa! Volunteers will be needed on Saturday, December 19th from 1-4:30 PM at Vare Recreation Center at 2600 Morris Street.  Volunteers will with help setup, decorate the space, sign in attendees, lead arts and crafts projects, serve food, distribute toys and coats, play games with the children and clean up at the event.

The Philadelphia Fashion Incubator 

Become a Designer-in-Residence (DIR) for one year with The Philadelphia Fashion Incubator at Macy's Center City!  The program is currently accepting applications to provide 6 emerging Philadelphia based apparel and/or accessories designers with resources to launch and grow their own fashion businesses! 

DIR's will receive mentoring from the city's leading industry professionals in addition to feedback from the Macy's merchandising team.  Applications are due no later than January 15, 2016 to be considered for the program.

'SHARP INSIGHT' Startup Aims to Increase Voter Turnout in African American Males 

YOACAP has a new program that will partner with barbers and barbershops throughout Philadelphia aiming to increase voter turn out in Philadelphia elections among African American men. The project, SHARP INSIGHT, will train barbers on how to provide non-partisan information to their customers about the importance of voting and volunteering in their communities. Barbers and barbershops who participate can receive small stipends, free promotional items and promos. United Way
December Shared Prosperity Roundtable 

The Mayor's Office of Community Empowerment and Opportunity in parternship with United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey, are hosting the December Shared Prosperity Roundtable entitled, The Sanctuary Model: Equipping Organizations in the Practice of Trauma Informed Care. The roundtable is scheduled for Friday, December 4, 2015, from 9-11am at the United Way Building located at 1709 Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia, PA 19103. 

The roundtable will feature a presentation by Dr. Sandra Bloom, founder of Sanctuary programs and author of numerous books on the Sanctuary Model and its application in organizational settings and will provide an opportunity to learn more about the Sanctuary Model and to engage in small group discussions on the model and its potential for transforming social service delivery systems.  Dr. Bloom is Associate Professor of Health Management and Policy at the School of Public Health, Drexel University, and Co-Director of  Drexel's Center for Nonviolence and Social Justice.

LGBT Elder Initiative
HIV & Aging: Improving Health & Wellness

On Saturday, December 5th, the LGBT Elder Initiative will present a program for HIV positive individuals to hear from healthcare experts about maintaining their health and wellness as they grow older.  This program will explore the relationship between aging and HIV, in addition to sharing strategies to better manage health issues, improve medication adherence and medication safety, and develop more effective communication with healthcare providers.  To register for this event please email or call (215)–720- 9451.  This conversation will be head at Center in the Park at 5818 Germantown Avenue.  

The Nonprofit Institute
Free Nonprofit Management Certification Program

The Netter Center for Community Partnerships invite nonprofits and faith based organizations to learn fundamental management skills through a FREE accelerated Certification Program. Two separate sessions are offered and take place over the course of six days.  Both will feature workshops by local experts in the field of nonprofit management. Participants must attend all sessions from 8:30AM- 3:00PM at the University of Pennsylvania's Christian Association, located at 118 South 37th Street. Participants may attend one of two weeks. 

Week 1: Wednesday, December 9th – Friday, December 11th
Week 2: Wednesday, December 16th – Friday, December 18th

JLV College Counseling
Scholarship Opportunities with December 2015 Deadlines

JLV College Counseling complied a list of over 100 different scholarship opportunities for high school and undergraduate students with December 2015 application deadlines.  Students are encouraged to visit the scholarship websites to get further details about eligibility and requirements. Scholarships range from 500-2500 dollars and cover a wide range of academic and non-academic fields.

Literacy Enrichment After School Program (LEAP)

LEAP is an after school program for students K-12 that provides homework assistance, computer literacy, and daily literacy enrichment activities for elementary school students operating after school Monday-Thursday from September to June at all Free Library neighborhood libraries, the Parkway Central Library, and Tuesday-Friday in the three regional libraries.  Students at all levels can also access Homework Help Online, powered by Brainfuse, which offers everything from live tutoring—in English and Spanish—to specialized test prep and a writing lab.

Work and Spirit Speaker Series 

Join business leaders for a day long retreat on Friday January 22, 2016 from 9:30 am-3:30pm for Leading with Courage and Heart -- A Day of Reflection for Leaders in Business & the Professions.  Stimulated by the insights from Dr. Karol Wasylyshyn, one of America's preeminent executive coaches and moderated by Dr. Marisa Guerin, UAC Board member, experienced executive and consultant. This retreat is the latest offering in Cranaleith's highly-regarded Work and Spirit series. Hosted at the Cranaleith Conference Center in the Somerton section of Philadelphia the mini-retreat is designed  with thought-provoking input and discussion on the ways that the most effective leaders tap into their deepest values and live them with courage and authenticity. The session includes time for personal journaling, as well as a delicious and healthful lunch.
