b-to-v Newsletter October 2015
Dear Readers,

This preface is about artists and entrepreneurs and parallels between their respective worlds.

Last weekend, I was sitting on my couch, a cup of steaming coffee and a glass of Port at my side, perusing the Feuilleton section of one of my favourite newspapers when I stumbled across the term “Pentimento”. To those of you who already know what it means – kudos. To those of you who do not know what it means: “A pentimento (plural pentimenti) is an alteration in a painting, evidenced by traces of previous work, showing that the artist has changed his or her mind as to the composition during the process of painting. The word is Italian for repentance, from the verb pentirsi, meaning to repent.” (Source: Wikipedia).

In a way, this reminded me of entrepreneurs who pivot (i.e. change) their business (or “work of art”, to stick to the metaphor). Why they do it? Typically, they find that the initial approach did not generate the desired results, just like the artist’s Pentimento. And just like the artist, an entrepreneur can pivot dramatically (i.e. change the business entirely) or simply adjust certain aspects of the business (e.g. change the pricing of their products).

I have another similarity between entrepreneurs and artists for you to consider. Young artists are often misunderstood, neglected or even openly rejected by the establishment. In many cases this rejection is due to the fact that they break with tradition, i.e. they do things differently or they do entirely new things. Like young artists, young entrepreneurs will get doubtful feedback and open rejections of their business idea. This occurs again and again and not only investors, but also “experts” (I guess those are the worst) and even family members weigh in on an idea. Later, once an artist or entrepreneur has reached a certain success level (or died, think of the post-mortem fame of certain artists…), is it not surprising how many people claim they “have always been supporters of the guy”?

One more similarity. We all know the famous “genius” quote (attributed to Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison) according to which “95% of my work is transpiration, 5% is inspiration”. In other words, it requires the solid mastery of your own craft (i.e. work work work work) plus little sparks of inspiration here and there to eventually produce something ingenious. This sounds pretty obvious for the arts. Many people “play the piano”. But there’s clearly a difference between “playing the piano” and “Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli playing the piano”. Because Michelangeli does not only master the technical challenges of a given piece of music. His interpretations, i.e. the way he played, made his recordings and concerts are unique. And how about entrepreneurs? We had venture capital legend Falk Strascheg attend a recent b-to-v Circle of Investors meeting in Munich. When asked, “What makes a great entrepreneur or investor” he answered: “Some entrepreneurs (and some investors) will eventually become good at what they do. They do it, they fail, they learn, then they do it again, and eventually they get better etc. But only very few will become outstanding. In my experience, you have to learn the trade first. And then you have to strive to become outstanding at what you do.”

Coming back to me on my couch this past weekend: I woke up, still sitting on the couch. It had become dark outside. I must have fallen asleep. Coffee was cold. Port was empty. Not too brilliant. But I got up and went over to open the piano anyways…

Have fun reading this October issue of the b-to-v Newsletter!

NOAH conference in London
November 12th and 13th, 2015

"We are excited to welcome so many CEOs of current and future billion euro companies.", says Marco Rodzynek, Founder and CEO of the NOAH Conference. "After the big success of NOAH Berlin, we are expecting to see many familiar and new faces.  NOAH combines an outstanding main stage program, unique networking opportunities, in-depth product workshops, the “Venture of Europe” start-up competition, the new NOAH start-up stage, the NOAH party and much more.”
The NOAH conference is one of the most distinguished European events for entrepreneurs. The first conference was held in London in 2009, now heading into its seventh term on November 12th and 13th, 2015. Since its proven success with more than 2'000 participants annually the NOAH conference premiered in Berlin in June 2015. The Berlin conference has a different angle to London; it presents a unique discussion platform for CEOs and founders from established champions and disruptive challengers across a number of key industry verticals. The London conference is focused on connecting capital with great companies and helping service providers find relevant customers.
The participants include internet CEOs, executives and investors, all meeting to gain insights into the latest recognized concepts, network and establish new business relationships, whilst also enjoying the NOAH business networking party. Known for its focus on profitable business models and data, the event is also about interacting with speakers, being inspired and having fun.
The main stage program features presentations from 80 impressive companies. NOAH London will have top-class speakers to enrich the program; Joey Levin (CEO IAC), Adam Neumann (Founding Partner WeWork), Peter Plumb (CEO Moneysupermarket), Oliver Samwer (CEO Rocket Internet), Dr. Klaus Hommels (CEO Lakestar) and Niklas Zennström (Founding Partner & CEO Atomico) to name a few.
Attendees can expect high-quality presentations, workshops and panel discussions from diverse fields such as e-commerce & retail, social media, advertising and travel.
Ticket sales have already begun. Further information about the NOAH conference can be found here.
We look forward to welcoming you at NOAH London next month!

Bayerische Venture Capital Akademie on November, 25th & 26th, 2015

The Bayerische Venture Capital Akademie is organized by b-to-v, in close cooperation with BayStartUP and supported by the Bayerisches Staatsministeriums für Wirtschaft und Medien, Energie und Technologie and BakerTillyRoelfs. The Akademie will take place at the Alpenhof Hotel in Murnau, a remote and secluded hotel south of Munich. The event is hosted in German.

The Bayerische Venture Capital Akademie is designed to support and foster the start-up eco-system in Bavaria and, more generally, in Central Europe.
In particular, the Akademie addresses private and corporate investors who plan to do direct investments in start-up companies or young growth companies.

The Akademie does not claim to provide recipes for successful investments. We do not believe in a "silver bullet" that makes start-up investments "safe". Start-up investments are risky by nature, and always will be. The Akademie simply attempts to explain the tools and approaches used by professional early-stage investors.  And the Akademie gives room to discuss these tools and approaches. The Akademie does not only address entrepreneurs and investors who plan to do their first start-up investments, it also addresses entrepreneurs and investors who already finalized their first start-up investments.

Interested b-to-v members and guests are kindly invited to contact Nadja Bulgheroni for further information.

b-to-v Private Investment Academy (Module I) on December 2nd - 4th, 2015
The b-to-v Private Investment Academy addresses private and institutional investors who plan to do direct investments in start-ups. The Academy offers not only an introduction into the start-up world, but also pragmatic advice for first investments, i.e. the preparation, execution and follow-up of first direct investments. For experienced business angels, the Academy serves as inspiration or benchmark since the participants receive detailed insights into the b-to-v investment processes which have been developed over the last 10 years. The b-to-v Private Investment Academy is an invitation-only event. The Academy is not an investment event. The goal of the Academy is to provide answers to the above mentioned questions. The event is organized by b-to-v. Selected start-ups in search of investor capital will present their business concepts in the course of the event, but these presentations will only cover a small section of the Academy. The next dates for the b-to-v Private Investment Academy in Ermatingen at the Lake of Constance:

- April, 06 - 08, 2016

The b-to-v Private Investment Academy in December 2015 is the 12th b-to-v Private Investment Academy.

Please contact Andrea Rogg for more information.
