b-to-v Newsletter May 2015
Dear member, partner, or potential member of b-to-v

So here we are: May has come to an end. And now June is here! Even though the weather in May did not feel like May at all – or is that just me? But be that as it may, the month of May somewhat resonates in people, does it not? It reminds me of warm May nights, emotional May parties, May liaisons, my ignorance of Walpurgis Night (in spite of my interest in witches), Floyd Mayweather, Jr, and, not to forget, “sell in May and go away”, the famous (and often disputed) stock exchange proverb.

In the venture capital industry, you cannot “sell in May and go away”. Even if you want to. In most cases, you cannot schedule your exits. You can agree with the team that now would be a good moment for an exit. But successful exits depend on many factors. First and foremost on the status and growth dynamic/potential of the underlying company. But also on the acquisition appetite of potential acquirers, which is linked with the general economic climate. Moreover, venture capitalists tend to prefer “being approached by potential acquirers” as opposed to “actively initiating an exit process”. Which brings us back to dancing in May: It just feels nicer to be wanted as a dance partner, since he or she (who is wanted) can choose his or her dance partner amongst a group of potential candidates…

I have few doubts, however, that May is an inspiring season. Things get going in May. We have seen some nice follow-on funding rounds for b-to-v Portfolio Companies. And we ourselves have a number of new investments and exciting news lined up.

But you may read for yourself.

With best regards on behalf of the b-to-v Team
Alexander Stoeckel

Review: b-to-v New York week 2015
Again we have met many investors and entrepreneurs during our annual US trip. We have seen a lot of start-ups with very high valuations at early stages without having shown the real proof of anything. It seems that for many investors the sentence “Peter Thiel will lead the round” means: Don’t lose your time with due diligence or alike – just jumb. Well – can be, must not. The opposite attitude of course exists as well and we very much (!) thank Alain Patricof for having shared his impressive investors wisdom with us. The grand master also has clearly commented on astronomic valuations.

The Bayerische Venture Capital Akademie is organized by b-to-v, in close cooperation with BayStartUP and supported by the Bayerisches Staatsministeriums für Wirtschaft und Medien, Energie und Technologie and BakerTillyRoelfs. The Bayerische Venture Capital Akademie is designed to support and foster the start-up eco-system in Bavaria and, more generally, in Central Europe.
In particular, the Akademie addresses private and corporate investors who plan to do direct investments in start-up companies or young growth companies.

We will conclude the day with a final panel discussion on early stage technology investments during the late afternoon.

Interested b-to-v Members and guests are kindly invited to contact Andrea Rogg for further information.

GSF goes Germany
For many years the magnitude of India’s potential was only surpassed by the size of its problems. When it came to future business everybody was looking on China. Things have changed for the better: Today India is probably the most dynamic eco system for digital and the „i“ is possibly the last letter standing from the formerly BRIC promise. Through several stays we got to know a great market potential, real innovative technologies and very ambitious entrepreneurs.
To share this experience and increase awareness for this opportunity, and to build a bridge between Germany and India, we happily invited our friend Rajesh Sawhney (founder of GSF - the most profiled accelerators of India), together with 20 young Indian entrepreneurs to Hamburg and Berlin in order to connect them with you as part of the German digital community.
Meet potential business partners, companies ready to invest and get a natural insight in one of the most vibrant economies of the world on a personal level. We have compiled a comprehensive program, starting in the town hall of Hamburg on Saturday June 27th and ending in the Indian embassy in Berlin on Friday July 3rd.
You can participate in company presentations on Monday June 29th in Hamburg or on Thursday July 2nd in Berlin, you can also participate in the Hamburg Startup Mixer on Tuesday afternoon June 30th in Hamburg. Just visit our website and register yourself and be a part of these extraordinary events. We do not charge for any event.

If you have any further question or inquiry let us know.
