From Local 21 Executive Director Debra Grabelle: What Happens Next is Up to Us


"First, I want to thank the Local 21 Executive Board and the Delegate Assembly for choosing me to be your Executive Director. I am excited to lead with you all in this significant moment for the labor movement.

Our union and thousands of us in the labor movement have spent many months preparing for the upcoming Janus vs. AFSCME Supreme Court decision. We have strengthened our union through a membership campaign and have achieved a historically high level of membership at 91% across IFPTE Local 21.

In the coming weeks, months, and years, there are going to be a lot of opinions about the implications of this Supreme Court decision. Many will say that we will be weaker because of this decision. It is true that the billionaires backing the Janus vs. AFSCME case have an overt agenda to weaken unions in order take away our rights, pensions, job security, and standard of living. They want us to believe that there is nothing we can do in the face of their campaign to decrease our collective power.

But we know that what happens next is up to us..."

California Unions Protect Pensions Yet Again

California union members have had to continually fight off proposals to weaken our pensions. This legislative session, Local 21 worked with union advocates from across the state to kill three California Senate Bills that would have targeted public sector pensions.

We did it! Together, we reached 90% union membership. Union membership is union strength. High union membership enhances our ability to bargain for strong contracts and protect our jobs.

Reminder: Please RSVP to the June 16th Spring Delegate Assembly


The Spring Delegate Assembly is on Saturday, June 16th at the Hotel Whitcomb in San Francisco. Our agenda will begin with the business meeting and discussion of the FY 18-19 budget.

If you are a Delegate or will be an Acting Delegate for your chapter, you must RSVP by Friday, June 8th. RSVP here.

Our guest speaker, President of the California Labor Federation and AFSCME 3299, Kathryn Lybarger, will help guide a collective conversation on the anticipated anti-union Janus v. AFSCME Supreme Court decision.

Following the Delegate Assembly, there will be a special lunchtime reception at the San Francisco Local 21 office.
