Using the writings of George Orwell as a starting point, the Orwell Youth Prize aims to inspire entrants in school years 8-13 to think and write about the world they live in and issues that matter today.
This year's theme is COMING UP FOR AIR: WRITING THE CLIMATE CRISIS - and they are particularly encouraging entries in the form of video game design. Check out the resource we helped create all about how to write in the form of games!
“As we all know, combating the climate crisis and ensuring the safe future of our planet involves making some difficult decisions. Many of the best games are also based around challenging decision-making, where each choice you make has an impact on what your options are going forward. We believe that gaming is fertile ground for thinking about politics and society.” - Orwell Youth Prize.
The deadline for submissions is 22nd April 2022.
Welcome to our new section! In this section, we'll be featuring advice from industry professionals each week from a variety of different roles!
This week, we have advice from a Connor White who got his job as a Junior QA Analyst through the now-ended Kickstart scheme!
What's a key piece of advice for career seekers looking to get into your role?
"This one is more for anyone looking to get into the industry in general and may have just graduated or is looking to transfer over into the industry. Never ever give up, even if you feel like giving up and are at rock bottom. Taking those next steps after that is vital as you can only go up from there. Just stay calm and enjoy the ride in the meantime."
Do you have any resources you'd like to share for career seekers looking to get into your job role?
"For QA Testing, I'd recommend doing stuff like taking part in closed/open betas. Taking part in playtesting sessions from companies and also taking time to research different testing methodologies used in gaming (Agile, Smoke, and Compliance testing as key examples) and applying them to doing mocks of the ISTQB Certification exam."
There's still time to hop into some EGGxtra special Easter-themed briefs! The briefs range from creating the Easter Bunny’s apprentice, writing all about an expert chocolatier, to playtesting some Easter-themed games!
Winners of these challenges have the chance to win a 1-2-1 career advice session with an industry professional.
