A Chance to Win

Tomorrow's Halloween. In the spirit of the holiday, we’ve selected a quote from Garth’s latest novel, A Sudden Light, which describes the ghost of Riddell House using Grandpa Samuel as a conduit for disseminating his message to the family:

"I saw the scrawling of notes on the table and was amazed that Grandpa Samuel could have created it. I didn't believe it was part of his imagination. No. He was acting as a conduit. Ben was speaking through Grandpa Samuel."

Do you know the word for channeling a spirit through writing, a practice popular around the turn of the twentieth century? If so, leave a comment in the post about this contest on Garth’s Facebook page (or email us if you aren’t on Facebook). We’ll choose a winner at random from those who comment by Friday, October 31. The prize is a bag full of Garth Stein schwag!

Garth spoke to a journalist from the Santa Cruz Sentinel about his exploration of family spirits in the novel:

"The idea is that the spirit world is not that far away from us, and it's not remote. When we feel the connection of a relative or a loved one who's no longer in their earthly incarnation, those are connections we're pressured to deny in the scientific world we live in. We have ways of marginalizing these spiritual connections and I wanted to delve into that a little bit."

A Sudden Light Accumulates Accolades in its Debut

Garth SteinIt’s official - A Sudden Light debuted at #14 on the New York Times Best Sellers list, thanks to you and other Garth Stein fans around the country!
This is one of many honors Garth’s fourth novel has been awarded this month.  Library Reads, which selects the top ten new books of each month, chose A Sudden Light for their #1 October pick. People Magazine chose it as their pick of the week, saying, “witty, atmospheric and filled with acutely observed characters, Stein’s ghost story possesses uncommon depth.”

A Sudden Light’s release was kicked off with a private party at the historic Stimson-Green Mansion in Seattle, a setting which inspired Elijah Riddell’s city house in the novel. Many of Seattle’s literati were in attendance to celebrate with the man of the hour, who donned in a tuxedo in a nod to the era in which some of the novel takes place.

Garth Signing BooksThe following evening was a public launch event at the Richard Hugo House in Seattle, attended by 150-plus fans, friends, and family.

Garth’s band, The Rejections (and Trailing Spouses), played several songs related to themes in the novel, including Cat Stevens’ “Father and Son” and a hilarious rendition of “Ghostbusters.” After reading from the book’s prologue, Garth sat down for a conversation with Seattle author Peter Mountford. The two chatted about the inspiration and process for writing the book and more, before taking questions from the audience.

A Sudden Light is the best of many genres: a ghost story, a love story, historical fiction….a truly killer read…a  bold, poignant book about wealth, family ties, and the power—and fallacy—of memory.”

Enzo Races in the RainNow readers of all ages and reading levels can enjoy Enzo’s story together, whether they’re just discovering words, growing as middle-grade readers (Racing in the Rain: My Life as a Dog), or enjoying the original modern classic (The Art of Racing in the Rain).

Catch an interview with R.W. Alley and his wife/writing partner Zoe Alley here.

On The Road

After a yearlong event hiatus to finish A Sudden Light, Garth is back on the road full-time! His fall tour started this September with a visit to the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association tradeshow in Tacoma, Washington, where he shared A Sudden Light’s backstory - and lots of matchboxes and temporary tattoos - with booksellers.

A Sudden Light tattoos proliferated across the tradeshow, at a Seattle7Writers celebration, and later at the Richard Hugo House launch party.

More tattoos are being passed out at Garth’s ongoing book tour stops.  Keep an eye on GarthStein.com for more signings and upcoming events. Garth will be touring throughout 2015, so stay tuned for updates!

One More Lap!

“ONE MORE LAP,” is the lifeline that Bonita Williams holds onto. In the past 40 years, Bonita has endured various unique medical setbacks, which this summer culminated in a life-threatening experience.  To expand her knowledge and love of adventure during this trying time, Bonita began reading extensively.

She first learned of The Art of Racing in the Rain from her book club in Juneau, her home of 26 years. Having grown up in the suburbs of Seattle before moving to Alaska, she was very familiar with the story locations, as well as having a love for dogs. Bonita was so impressed with The Art of Racing in the Rain, she has given over 20 copies to friends to “share the lessons of life in the book.”

This summer, after a friend contacted Garth about Bonita’s medical condition and her love for Enzo and his famous line, “one more lap,” she had the opportunity to meet Garth, an experience she describes as one of the best gifts she’s every received in her entire life.  While talking, Bonita showed Garth her copy of The Art of Racing in the Rain, with the list of the friends she’d given the book to penciled tidily on the last page. Without hesitation, Garth signed her dog-eared copy.

Enzo’s love for life continues to give Bonita the will to take the steps she needs to continue being with her friends and family. Her family feels that her belief in “one more lap” pulled her through a grave medical crisis this summer.

*Thanks to Sandy Carter and Bonita Williams for sharing Bonita’s story with us.
