Mary's Mention

I think it's safe to say...winter is coming. It's actually one of my favorite seasons, too. Especially because we work with B&B's all across North America. That means guests can enjoy the breathtaking seasonal beauty of classic New England inns or head west (or south) when they want to seek out some warmer weather. With that in mind, there are two properties I'd like to introduce you to who just relisted with us. They will definitely fit the bill.

First let's head west to Carole's Bed and Breakfast in San Diego, CA, located in North Park in the heart of the city. Just 10 minutes from amazing attractions such as The San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, Mission Bay, and Old Town San Diego, this beautiful Craftsman-style home features a large deck and patio area nestled within numerous gardens ideal for relaxation and revitalization. The inn has eight guest bedrooms, one garden studio, a one-bedroom house and a two-bedroom apartment. A generous continental breakfast is served each morning, which includes a main entrée (such as egg dishes, pancakes, or waffles), fresh fruit, homemade muffins, and toast, plus fresh ground coffee and hot tea.

Back east, travelers will feel as if they've rode off into the sunset with a stay at Scranton Seahorse Inn in Madison, CT, conveniently situated right on Main Street where guests can walk to great restaurants, boutiques, coffee shops, and the beaches. This elegant B&B features seven beautifully decorated and spacious guestrooms complete with complimentary Wi-Fi. Some include Jacuzzi tubs too. There are also several common areas, including a library and sitting room, plus porches, a gazebo, and gardens, which means the opportunity to kick back and relax are endless! And speaking of opportunities, innkeeper Michael Hafford is also a pastry chef who serves up fresh, locally-sourced breakfasts daily. Cooking classes and in-room massages round out the list of amazing amenities. The inn is a 10-minute walk from the train. Guests can connect to the Shoreline East via Metro North or Amtrak if they want to leave their car at home.

Innkeeper Interview! Get to Know Lynnette Scofield of The William Henry Miller Inn

Welcome to this month's column all about our innkeepers. In this edition, we're speaking with the lovely Lynnette Scofield of The William Henry Miller Inn in Ithaca, NY, who provided some surprising answers to our inquiries.

1. What has been your strangest request?
To find a pasture with sheep so that a guest's dog could herd the sheep and get some exercise.

2. Do you have a favorite TV show?
Yes, The Gilmore Girls. Especially when (at the beginning of the show) there was a wedding of twins and the mother of the bride was overwhelmed. Lorelai just took charge, which was just what Mom needed. I think of that often. What I try to NOT think of often was the stay that Lorelei and Rory had at a B&B. So annoying and so not right. The
other show that I watch for tips is Below Deck, a massive yacht where tips range in the $15,000 range. What? Yup.

3. What's the one thing you wish guests knew about B&Bs?
Actually, there are a few. One revolves around early check-ins. I think that we all feel that way. Two, that this is a business. I have employees. I pay them well, and they work very hard. We don't sit with our feet up once breakfast is over. We do a LOT for the community, and we receive requests for donations every single day. A night's stay is a very substantial donation. Three, that we will bend over
backwards to accommodate you. All you need to do is let us know if there is something you would prefer or like more of. This isn't a problem that we face, but I always am concerned about this.

4. What's the best compliment you've ever received?
That guests would like to move in.

5. Bonus fun fact!
I've had a race horse named after me. Always hoped that he (my Dad) didn't look at the horse's ass and say, 'H
mmmm...I think I'll name her Lynnette.'
